I think that all it would have taken would have been several seconds of a hug and "thank God you're alive" or similar and S. 9 would have been so different, with or without AJ having gone with Harm. Harm's resignation and sacrifice was part of what put Mac's defenses up so high, so that might have made things easier between them.
