Subject: JAG and NCIS--some thoughts (inside, please)

Not to disrupt an interesting "thought"/"thread", but. . . (I'm going to, anyway! [evil grin])

Sometime in the last couple of weeks, I stumbled across the fact that a couple of "characters" from JAG made cameo appearances in NCIS's first season, specifically Lt. Bud Roberts. That intrigued me enough to finally break down and purchase said Season 1 of NCIS.

If no one saw it, essentially Special Agent Gibbs brought/requested Lt. Roberts from JAG to try to find a way around the requirements regarding access to the military DNA data base--the same issue that came up in "Ice Queen"/"Meltdown". Bud, bless his heart, refused to give an inch. Furthermore, you could just "see" the resentment of the way Harm's case was handled by NCIS just roll off him. And I think Bud maybe got an insight into how others perceived him--i.e. as a relative "pushover". If anyone else remembers/saw that scene, would be nice to know if it's just me or whether any other JAG fans react(ed) the same way.

Secondly, Cmdr. Faith Coleman was the other "reprised" character. In this episode, she was not nearly the "ice berg"--and she was the prosecutor--she was in "Ice Queen"/"Meltdown". Same obsession with long, freshly-sharpened pencils, though.

I would urge others to give NCIS a fair chance, especially now that the "gorilla" is off the scene. There are actually some pretty good stories being told. And the quirky characters. Abby attracted me from day one; according to the special features part, the actress who plays Abby REALLY is Goth in real life--and has had a life-long interest in forensics. Very, very interesting.

Will close--history papers calling (anybody interested in the financial merry-go-round that was the financial settlement of the Treaty of Versailles in 1919?? Ha!)

Keeping up as time will allow. Been on Spring Break so have been catching up. Here we go!!

[> whether or not the Gorilla is involved in day to day business isn't why I don't watch - IMO that man ruined JAG simply because he liked being contrary - I won't support anything that bolsters his ego or his bank account- A succesful NCIS does both. Though I wouldn't mind seeing the one ep with Bud in it. -- chris k, 21:22:26 03/22/08 Sat

[> This topic is ironic in that those of us who do watch NCIS once in a while have begun to hear the same dialog being used with different characters, i.e. Tony and his girl---I'm only this way with you. I almost swallowed my gum on that one. -- Dorothy in HOuston, 23:37:21 03/22/08 Sat

[> [> lol!!! actually that’s the main reason I don’t watch NCIS, I gave it a try but it looked and sounded like a recycled JAG, so I stopped. I could so recognize the lines and the characters were built following the same pattern. the only one I liked was Abby! honestly, I had no idea it was a DPB show (I don’t really pay attention to the credits :-P) and at the time I had no idea anyway about what DPB had done to JAG. so my perception of NCIS was uncoloured by any resentment I might have felt for DPB, but NCIS still seemed to me like a copy of JAG. -- jo, 03:50:28 03/23/08 Sun

[> You know, in another universe on the Paramount lot they had /have the Star Trek franchise. And as any trekker worth their faser knows, in the first two years of any Trek vehicle (except maybe "Deep Space 9") there will be a given number episodes that have the exact same plot as famous episodes of the original. Oh, there are minor tweaks here and there, but the suspected mass murderer living in disguise is still the suspected mass murderer living in disguise. Inside . . . -- Dancer, 04:28:39 03/23/08 Sun

Aside from the commonality of "Jethros" (Albert Jethro Cheggwidden and Leroy Jethro Gibbs), DBP's main steals tend to be over-arching "themes." Those of us who remember "First Monday" can atest to that.

In fact, going back to Magnum, we have Thomas Magnum, Jr. losing his fighter pilot father in Korea; Harmon Rabb, Jr. having his fighter pilot father go MIA in Viet Nam; the Supreme Court staffer whose dad went MIA from the CIA and the FBI agent assigned to Gibbs in the NCIS pilot, "Meltdown," who's dad was missing from some operation or other. (Can't remember now.)

Oh, and for those of you Magnum fans who don't know, Gibbs has now acquired a first wife and child who were killed in a terrorist attack. I don't think either one is going to show up married to a high-ranking military officer from North Vietnam, but you never know. :-D

[> I decided not to every watch NCIS after seeing the characters on JAG - there is no way in the world a government agency would allow such improper and unprofessional behavior that goes on. Tony acts like an absolute idiot and don't even get me started on the woman with the tattoos and weird clothes, LOL. This show looks like a cartoon more than a drama. Just my opinion, don't mean to offend anyone who likes this show. Plus I loved JAG and this show helped kill it. -- IndyKat, 10:07:54 03/23/08 Sun

[> Count me among the non-NCIS watchers. Even now, I can't think of watching a show that killed my favorite JAG. Year 10 was mean spirited and I admit I still resent it. There are other things to do/watch, rather than support NCIS. -- ConK, 12:07:12 03/23/08 Sun

[> [> that's the way I feel - If DPB didn't have his income and the ego boost of a high rated NCIS - he wouldn't have let JAG fall by the wayside- The simple fact that JAG was relegated to Friday night - instead of the new NCIS - annoyed the dickens out of me - Then add that even though DPB isn't involved in the day to days of NCIS - he still gets the accolades for creating it as well as income from the profits - thanks but no thanks - -- chris k, 12:31:54 03/23/08 Sun

I can't stand any of the characters except Mark Harmon. Particularly awful is the guy who was Danny Walden on JAG - such a pouty wuss!

[> I don't watch NCIS either (even though I do like Mark Harmon), but to find a positive in a lot of negatives, DPB did create Harm and gave him to us to enjoy for 10 years even though thelast year was not ideal and it did not end on a positive note for DJE. As DJE said in a recent interview, he did not need to look for work for 10 years (and made a lot of money but he did not have the family time he desired). -- ED, 16:41:10 03/23/08 Sun

[> I watch the episodes from the cbs.com website and I have noticed in a difference in atmosphere from S4 to S5, they don't look stressed. MH had a lot to with that i think, (Inside) -- Debbie Brady, 17:48:56 03/23/08 Sun

I have NCIS S1 and they all look stressed but I do believe S2 and S4 were focused on catching a certain bad guy instead of focusing on characters but that is just me.

If you watch S5 Ep.2 you will notice that Tony is relying on his NCIS family to get him through his pain. The continued eps are definitely alot about family and what a family is.

What I would like to see is more of MH (Gibbs) and PP (Abby) signing. That would be wonderful!

[> I just can't get into NCIS. If they would feature a story with Harm and Mac, I'd watch -- the sparks between them beats out anything between any of these other characters in NCIS and I thought JAG's 'honourable' story lines balanced out any of the grim CSI-stuff that NCIS seems to dwell on. NCIS is all 'same old, same old' to me, closer to all the CSIs and SVUs and Law and Orders already on. Bring back JAG!!!!! -- mj, 05:30:42 03/24/08 Mon
