Subject: Gateway 9300 dead on startup

I have a Gateway 9300 notebook which has been running on AC without the main battery for about two years until recently when it suddenly refused to respond to switchon. No signs of life at all. There is still 19V at the DC input connector.

I have found that the 3.6V Ni-Mh rechargeable battery appears to have failed i.e. it is delivering only 1.3V. The manual suggests that this battery is there to allow changeover of the main battery in the middle of a session if that goes flat (which is irrelevant in my case on AC). I'm unsure in the 9300 if it has any other role i.e BIOS/setup memory as per a PC as the BIOS memory is described as "flash" type.

Has anybody any suggestions including whether the failure of the 3.6V battery would produce the "dead" symptom? I know - I can replace the battery (at a cost) on spec but...
