 Another update:
I downloaded Dell's Inspiron 3700 ESS Maestro driver from
http://support.ap.dell.com/support/topics/global.aspx/support/downloads/en/downloads_splash?c=au&l=en&s=gen&~mode=popup&file=35420
unpacked it, ran update driver from device manager, chose 'let me choose driver', pointed it to the ess folder, chose the MPU401 component and it installed without error.

For the bt829 capture device, I got an Asus file
ASUS - Video
ati805_w2kxp.zip
from Driverguide.com, did the same as per audio, choosing the bt829 wdm item in the list.
This also installed without error but I've yet to confirm wether it works.
