Society of Seven, Lani Misalucha concert in Las Vegas: The show to watch

Balita News Service; 7/31/2004

Lani Misalucha and the Society of Seven

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

LOS ANGELES—Asia’ singing sensation Lani Misalucha and the Society of Seven enveloped in song a select audience who attended their news conference at the posh Raquel residence Wednesday night.

Lani, who is expected to elevate the Philippine music industry in America, music popularity’s promised land, has promised that this is the show to watch, adding that she is positive that the two-hour show will allow mainstream audiences to notice the Filipino artist.

Veteran performers Society of Seven enthused about Lani, saying that her joining their band allowed them to explore new avenues of music advancement. "She [Lani] is the lady who can prove that the Filipino artist is world-class," said Tony Ruivivar, creative leader of the group.

Larry Harrison, who discovered David Foster, said that Lani will blaze a trail into America’s music industry. "She is a versatile artist who can really belt a song and is at home with the different musical genres. Lani is one talent that should be supported and cheered on.

"Trust me when I say that this show will soon be moved to a different slot. We are playing at Bally’s for six months but once the buzz is out, I am sure that the show will play for a longer date and our current contract for a 3 p.m. show will be moved to prime time. These people [The Society of Seven and Lani] represent the best in Filipino talent and they will [surely] make it."

The show, which promises to encompass all the shows in the strip on one stage, will kick off August 7 at the Jubilee Theater of Bally’s Casino, an ultra-modern, high-rise hotel that is considered to be one of Las Vegas’ most elegant resorts. Lani and The Society of Seven will be performing six days a week.

The Society of Seven (SOS), on the other hand, is a powerhouse cast of genuine talents whose performances have been enjoyed by varied audiences traveling from all over the world. From blues, ballads, comedy and impersonations, the SOS continue to bring new meaning to the word "variety" with enough energy to set seven stages ablaze. Like a chameleon, the SOS constantly changes colors throughout a performance.

The SOS, a powerhouse cast of genuine talents and musical energy, is composed of Tony Ruivivar, the creative leader of the group. He plays the guitar and has a warm down-home earthy voice; Bert Sagum, the spontaneous comic, who leads the SOS laugh brigade; Gary Bautista, a vocal dynamo who can render anything from Broadway to Sinatra hits (his voice can also do hundreds of impressions); Hoku Low, possessor of the crystal clear high falsetto voice and plays the bass and horns; Randy Abellar, gifted with a vocal range that is incredible and an accomplished drummer; Roy Guerzo, master keyboardist of the group and Wayne Wakai, an excellent arranger and is able to sing any vocal part from low bass to high gospel falsetto.

Ruivivar, in addressing some of the media’s questions, said the concert theme is based on the immigrant experience of America. "It is amazing that America is home to different sectors and races but still we are able to prove that we can live in peace. We salute that. And we believe in that."

"The almost two-hour show has been designed to appeal to mainstream audiences. We have put together a show that is entertaining, we have a repertoire that will surely impress even the most hard-to-please audience. It’s the kind of show that will not only showcase our musical talent but it is also one that will satisfy concertgoers."

Lani Misalucha to perform in Las Vegas for 6 months

Updated 11:02am (Mla time) Aug 06, 2004
By Ruben V. Nepales
Inquirer News Service

LOS ANGELES, California, United States of America -- Misalucha spoke to the Fil-Am media at a gathering to announce that she and the Society of Seven (SOS), a veteran show band from Hawaii, have landed a six-month contract to perform at Bally's Las Vegas beginning this Saturday, Aug. 7. The show's publicists are declaring that with her gig at the 1,160-seat Jubilee! Theater, Misalucha becomes "the first Filipino artist originating from the Philippines to headline a main showroom in a major Las Vegas strip hotel-casino for six months."

Misalucha added, "My manager here has so many plans for me. I have an upcoming album. I have a tour. So I don't regret leaving the Philippines."

About her Las Vegas stint, in which she will sing with the SOS at the Jubilee! Theater daily except Friday, she gushed, "Honestly, this is something that I've never dreamed of. I never thought that this would happen to me and that I'm going to be there singing for six months. This is something that I've never planned. Never, never, never."

Misalucha, labeled in Manila as "Asia's nightingale," and the SOS will be performing as one act. SOS includes Gary Bautista, who also had a flourishing career as a singer and impressionist in Manila before moving to Hawaii.

SOS co-founder and member Tony Ruivivar explained, "We are pooling our talents together. We have a good chance of competing with the other great talents who are in Las Vegas. Never in our entire career did we think that we were going to have a woman in the group because I do a lot of numbers as a woman (laughs), and so does Gary. But when we heard Lani sing, we said, this is it. She is the best I've ever heard. She also has a great personality. She's very down to earth."

SOS manager Larry Harrison added, "I brought one of the top writers of the Las Vegas Sun to watch a preview. He said, my God this is unbelievable. He stood up and gave a standing ovation. Society of Seven is exciting on its own. They can put on a show that's unbelievable. With Lani, it's going to be even better."

The other members of the SOS, which is a regular act on the Strip, are Randy Abellar, Roy Guerzo, Wayne Wakai, Hoku Low and Bert Sagum.

Misalucha and SOS' revue of music and comedy routines goes on at 3 p.m. "Jubilee!," the long-running spectacle of occasionally topless showgirls, is the evening attraction at the theater.

Sustaining an afternoon show for several months in Las Vegas is a challenge, so if the revue by the act jokingly referred to as the Society of Eight (including Misalucha) is a success, the trailblazing Filipino-American producers, marketing and advertising people deserve as much credit as the performers.

The show is produced by Rosy Cheeks Entertainment Group Inc., composed of Mendrei and Cecile Leelin, Noli Misalucha and Edwin and Lani Raquel, at whose LA mansion the press conference was held. Former Manila writer Jackie Y. Regala handles the marketing and promotions. Her husband Gerry A. Katigbak is in charge of advertising.

SHOW REVIEW: Society of Seven

Old Vegas gets a new look: Society of Seven's latest effort at Bally's on the Strip digs up some buried irony from the city's past

By MIKE WEATHERFORD
REVIEW-JOURNAL

Filipina pop singer Lani Misalucha (above) has joined Society of Seven (below) for the Hawaiian show band's afternoon slot at Bally's.

In a way it's a bit strange that Society of Seven, which stands as one of the last authentic-feeling examples of an Old Vegas nightclub act, spends so much of its time imitating other people.

But that's Old Vegas too. The veteran Hawaiian show band's latest effort to carve out a niche on the Strip digs up some buried irony.

Consider that Sammy Davis Jr. -- easily the most-imitated Las Vegas performer of all -- was quite the impressionist himself. You can hear these forgotten routines on some of his live recordings, and a recent reissue of a whole album ("All-Star Spectacular") of him imitating other people.

Society of Seven keeps the strange circle going. Singer Gary Bautista does an imitation of Mirage headliner Danny Gans doing his "Twelve Days of Christmas" routine, in which one of the people he imitates is Engelbert Humperdinck, who also used to do impressions back in the day.

Got all that?

The thing about Society of Seven is that the business of clowning with other people's identities -- all the shuffling of wigs and costumes as one player takes the spotlight while the other rotates to drums or keyboards -- is the real fun of the show.

The few moments when they're just being themselves are the ordinary ones. The beginning, for instance, with the standard-issue take on Neil Diamond's "America" or their later digging up of a better-left-buried Gatlin Brothers hit, "All the Gold in California."

Be honest. You wouldn't go to a whole show of that. But you sure might go to one in which a heartfelt crack at Puccini's "Nessun Dorma" is followed immediately by the words "Disco time!" and the thump-thump beat of "Stayin' Alive."

Or when the group's founder and show narrator, Tony Ruivivar, continues to wear his "Phantom of the Opera" cape while the show segues into its patriotic "God Bless the U.S.A." finale.

The group has been a fixture at the Outrigger Waikiki Hotel for 35 years. When that challenge wore off, the original cast "cloned" itself by teaching the act to younger performers in 2001, freeing the veterans to conquer the Strip.

They're still trying, this time with an afternoon time slot at Bally's. And the seven guys were wise to realize that after three previous attempts, it's time for a little fresh blood.

Enter Lani Misalucha, a Filipina pop singer and TV personality who -- like most of her country's entertainers -- has met an indifferent response in the United States beyond the stateside Filipino community.

As you might guess, she's a big-voiced singer modeled after famous North American exports such as Whitney Houston and Celine Dion. Know what else she does? You don't suppose it would involve imitations of Barbra Streisand, Shania Twain and Britney Spears, do you?

Misalucha's own operatic leanings blend with the group's knack for balancing its lowbrow shtick with a sincere affection for higher-minded singing. Her signature rendition of "Nessun Dorma" fits hand in glove with Bautista's crack at the famous "Vesti la Giubba" sequence from "I Pagliacci." Both sound credible to non-opera aficionados, and neither singer embarrasses the other with lopsided skills.

Misalucha has an often-glorious voice, but is still blending her comedy into the group. Audiences weren't sure whether to laugh or take at face value a Celine Dion impression that's dead-on with the goofy tuxedo pants and suspenders she wears in her Las Vegas show.

But in a less tangible aspect, the addition of Misalucha fits well beyond any business plan on paper. Whether she's making the guys hop to it as Beyonce's robotic video dancers, or putting them through the paces of the Bee-Gees' "You Should Be Dancing," there's a palpable energy onstage that wasn't always there before.

A week after its opening, the show was still in need of trimming some flat spots that could tighten it to 80 minutes or so instead of 95. But old habits take time to change, and these habits should only be changed with care. You don't find Old Vegas just anywhere these days, especially when it's pretending to be something else.

just wanted to share the article..i know i might get negative responses again..oh well..hehe..i know that will never change but i'm just happy that she got her break already even tho she's starting in Vegas..i watched the show on tape already..i'm watching it live on September 5th and 6th..can't wait..hehe

>The show to watch

Jun M.:
You know..I think I have heard the name of that group-
"The Society of Seven" somewhere before. Somewhere in
the country, I mean.. (our country) But for some reason
I think it was called "The SECRET Society of Seven." (?)

But I can't be too sure at the monument. hehe.. But the
name of the group would be great if member was from a
different country. Uh.. no, I'm wrong.. Then it should be
named "The Seven Different Societies."

I like one of the official posters. hehe.. Good one.

-------------------They are An Hawaiian Group(?)-------

Jun M. says:
Well, I'm thinking that was one of the groups that played
at the Holiday Inn on Roxas Blvd before. But I could be
wrong. But if I'm right then they are good. And they are
a Filipino group. What's with the tidbit of saying they
are an 'Hawaiian Group/band'(?) Lani isn't saying she's
an Hawaiian singer. di ba?!

Ok. its possible they were just saying the band is based
in Hawaii. That its their home base as a group. But maybe
they should have kept everyone on a pinoy group theme..

Not just because of what I know alot of you is thinking
about something I don't like to mention or talk about
too much about Hawaiians who are actually pinoy.

Tia Carrera comes to mind..

Its because if I was an american/foreigner reading the
show's poster and trying to decide to watch or not..
it may depend on people thinking what kind of music
is going to be played. And all I can think I'm about
to hear knowing they are from Hawaii is "Don Ho and
other Hawaiian music."

Not really the top 40/classy show it is going to be.

You missed that 'naughty' concert promoter/producer..

But you probably cornered the retirees from Florida
playing for that weekend. lolz..

Larry Harrison has got to be some music person to have been
resonsible for bring out one of the world's best and most
famous music producer, DAVID FOSTER..

When he is saying she will "blaze a trail into the U.S.
music industry", I hope he means that he is going to be
the person who is going to be personally responsible for
the trail blazing. eh? He could be.. He should be! If he
feels that strongly about Lani's singing and performance.

mmJun :-}

But if he's just making nice statements for the show and
isn't going to help do more than just promote the artist
who is singing with the show.. Then the concert producer
might as well hired Boy Abunda instead.

Because no one I asked seems to know who he is so far
dispite the claim he had a direct link to David Foster.

Is he still in working terms with the man that he can
make a request for him to watch and make his own
professional assessments about Lani's talent?

Note : One of the oldest Regine Velasquez tidbit I heard
about was on DAVID FOSTER. I'm still asking for more
definite information from a music source about it.

But I think its a safe thing to mention the possibility
that David Foster not only heard about Regine before
but the story was that he became very interested in
working with her and wanted to produce an album.

Stay tune. E-mail request for information sometimes
takes a little time to get back.

I actually saw the show two Saturdays ago pa. And here's my review. (Bongga, nag re-review na aketch, lol.)

Maliit lang 'yong venue at mga 80% puno. Of course 90% nang crowd is pinoy. 3pm ang show nila, ibig sabihin, hindi prime time. I doubt if they would ever make it to prime time. Si Lani pwede pa, pero ang SOS, ewan ko lang. I don't know how the group could hold up with the series of shows. I've heard that they are not selling well on weekdays. If you ask me, the downfall of the show is the SOS. Pang pinoy crowd lang talaga sila. And their impersonations of legendary Vegas performers were really poor. However in fairness, Lani did very well with her impersonations. Do'n sya kilala eh, LOL.

SOS have been around na in Vegas, it's only now that they're given a break at Bally's, for the very obvious reason, Lani Misalucha. The show wouldn't have carried through without Lani. Based on the people's cheers and applause, most of the people really came there to see Lani, and not the SOS. Parang nakisabay na lang ang SOS sa kay Lani.

Sa performances naman. Well, it's more of like a musical comic act actually. Lani didn't really do much of singing the way she does in her shows. She mainly did imitations of Celine, Barbara, Britney, etc... Comic act lang talaga. Parang nag step down sya from a concert artist to a comic act performer. Well I guess she had to start from the bottom again, kasi di pa sya kilala sa Vegas. I can tell that the people wanted to hear her sing more songs using her own interpretation, rather than mimicking the original artists. Pero gaya nga ng sinabi ko, comic act nga eh. Kaya she needs to follow her script. As usual, Lani's crowd pleasing operatic impressions were the most applauded numbers of the show (Nessun Dorma & some excerpts from the Phantom).

Overall, the SOS was so-so, Lani was impressive and promising. If ever Bally's decides to go on with the show, it would be with Lani only. SOS didn't really do much for me or the rest of the crowd.

About Regine naman in Vegas. Pwede ba, eh reyna na sya eh, tapos bababa pa sya sa trono nya para gumawa ng comic act sa Vegas. Hello, ok lang kayo? Regine has a reputation to protect and she is the Philippine's pride, tapos mag ma-matinee show lang sya sa Vegas? Isipin nyong mabuti. Regine represents the Philippine's finest, it is her responsibility to carry our name with dignity. Di sya pwedeng basta-basta na lang. She's one of the world's finest for crying out loud, and that is recognized by other international arists (Brian McKnight, David Foster, Legrand, etc...) The reason why Regine is very much respected all over the world, even by other artists, kasi, DI SYA NAGPAPATALO O SASALUDO SA IBANG BANSA O SA KAHIT KANINO MANG ARTIST...SYA ANG TUMATANGGI AT HINDI SYA ANG TINATANGGIHAN. REGINE WILL NOT STOOP DOWN JUST FOR A GIG IN VEGAS. Kaya I am soooooo proud of her (ayan naiiyak na tuloy ako). We all should be proud of her. Hayaan nyong dumayo ang mga lintek na foreigners na yan para makinig sa Asia's Songbird. 'Yan ang Songbird, hindi magla-landing para kani-kanino lang. Kaya swerte tayong mga pinoy. Regine loves performing for the pinoys more than any other audiences in the world. Otherwise, matagal nang iniwan ni Regine ang Pinas. Regine RULES...

Outstanding music review there, shanikwa ..
Informative. And your awareness buzz is top notch.
Some of your pinoy pop culture observations is
right on the money.

Good timing too. I'm suppose to release a music
report to the Regine list tomorrow about an
4 year old Regine media attack (the copycat issue)
that came out during the time of her "R2K" run.

Who was responsible for having it posted and
pushed into the media. And who in reality was
the actual artist who was being the true copycat
back then. Make a wild guess on that one. lolz..

Its being posted as a closure to the whole thing.

Actually mali talaga ang tag line nila kay Lani sa show. They were introducing her as Asia's nightingale and Asia's singing sensation. Sa Pinas ok lang 'yon kasi di naman really makakalabas 'yon eh. Pero, we are talking about Vegas now. Asia's nightingale ka at Asia's singing sensation tapos 3pm matinee show ka lang, sa isang maliit na venue (less than a thousand seater). Ok lang sya? They should stop that bago magcomplain ang Asian community at batuhin sya sa stage, kasi medyo nakakahiya and pagkukunwari nila. And I don't know why Lani is simply allowing this bullshit. She seems like a nice person naman. She needs to realize and be more aware of what's being brought upon her by her handlers.

Lani is a talented and a versatile artist. Her talent will take her to a respected status in the music industry, but what they're doing is cheating and deceiving the people, and that will not take her career anywhere but the drains.

With new addition, SOS rescues afternoon slot at Bally's
By Jerry Fink

LAS VEGAS SUN

What: "Society of Seven with Lani Misalucha."

Where: Bally's Jubilee! Theatre.

Rating (out of five stars): ****

One of Vegas' most talented groups of performers has added a new dimension to its former all-male cast -- Lani Misalucha, a sultry, sensual and richly talented woman who can sing with the best of them.

The Society of Seven has been entertaining fans with an arsenal of impressions and music for decades. They first came to Vegas as the Fabulous Echoes from Hong Kong in 1964 for a four-week engagement at the Thunderbird that turned into a gig that lasted more than four years.

In 1969 they moved to Hawaii, where they were one of the state's top tourist attractions. Then, three years ago, SOS decided to return to Vegas, leaving behind a second SOS group to hold down the fort in the Aloha State.

After a successful five-month run at the Las Vegas Hilton they moved to the Golden Nugget in early 2002, a deal that went sour amid accusations by SOS that impressionist Danny Gans was trying to force them out of the venue, a charge that was denied by a Gans spokesman when the allegations were first made.

According to claims by SOS, Gans' contract with MGM MIRAGE dictated that no other impressionists would work for the organization. Gans performs at the Mirage, an MGM MIRAGE property. At the time, the Golden Nugget was owned by the same corporation.

SOS left the Nugget and, in November 2002, turned up at the Aladdin's CenterStage, a 400-seat, cabaret-style showroom. But they lost the gig after a few months, when the hotel decided to turn the space over to magician Steve Wyrick.

The group was without a home until it premiered at Bally's 1,100-seat Jubilee! Theatre this month. Bally's is part of the Caesars Entertainment family.

It's too bad that such a talented troupe hasn't received more respect from executives at some of the venues at which they've played in the past.

At least SOS has the respect of their many fans.

There have been a few changes in their production since their brief stay at the Aladdin -- most notably the addition of Lani, one of the top female vocalists in the Philippines.

Recognizing a good thing when they see it, SOS has fully integrated her into the production -- sometimes accepting the role of a backup band, allowing the gifted vocalist to stand alone in the spotlight.

And when she does, Lani shines -- especially when she is using her own voice and not trying to impersonate such popular singers as Barbra Streisand (one of her best impressions), Whitney Houston (also very good), Shania Twain (not so good) or a dozen others.

Lani has a powerful voice with remarkable range that has you holding your breath as you wait for her to reach the end of a note. Lani is a good enough vocalist in her own right; she doesn't need to imitate anyone to be impressive.

The first half of the show was devoted to impressions of entertainers who have worked in Vegas through the years, among them the Rat Pack, Chubby Checker, Celine Dion, Sonny and Cher, Gladys Knight, Wayne Newton and many others.

Not all of the impressions are that impressive, but even the flops are fun in the hands of the SOS gang.

After acknowledging several popular performers in Vegas (among them Clint Holmes, the Scintas and Lance Burton), SOS gave a special salute to their alleged nemesis, Gans.

"In his show Danny Gans does a Christmas song nightly, because he believes every day is Christmas," said SOS leader and show emcee (and performer) Tony Ruivivar. "Well, we do, too."

Multitalented Gary Bautista, another standout in the production, did an impression of Gans doing impressions of a dozen celebrities doing their version of "The Twelve Days of Christmas."

An evening with SOS is always a fun evening -- or rather, afternoon, since that is now their time slot. Whether enough fans are willing to attend a matinee performance to fill the showroom on a daily basis remains to be seen, but with Lani in the cast, perhaps the production is enhanced enough to provide the extra incentive.

The production opens and closes on patriotic themes -- at the beginning it's with a rousing rendition of Neil Diamond's "America," and at the end it's "God Bless America" and Lee Greenwood's "God Bless the USA."

When Lani sang "God Bless America," several fans began to cry.

It was a powerful ending to a fast-paced show that ranged from slapstick comedy to disco to an abbreviated version of "Phantom of the Opera."

Some of the comedy has become a little dated, but that is a minor distraction in a show that packs a lot of entertainment into 75 minutes.

Geez.. woman.
Why don't you just marry an american while you're there.

Anything.. she'll do anything.. to try and win the
audience over. I stopped working with robot artists
more than a decade ago.

i don't see the fuss about her singing "God Bless America"..it's only obvious where she's performing..she's in the US..of course she's going to sing a patriotic song about the US cuz that's what the group was singing..every little thing she does people on here criticizes..that's why whatever success she might have in the future, people will still look into things that might be wrong with her..people need to realize she's not in the Philippines anymore and trying to be succesful..so just wait and see cuz it's still early..give her a break..LOL..it's not that serious..

You're right. Lea sang it too.
Bad days.. No gold for us from the olympics..

*sob* >:-(

But I got an article to post. To defend my position..
It'll be a while. Till then- Someone request Lani
sing something that the pinoys watching can cry to
as well. I don't mean Abba's- "Money, Money, Money"

lolz..

mmJun :-/
God bless America. And the Philippines..

Actually I seen a video of that famous fat lady
singing 'God Bless America.' Good (lyrics) words.
