>>Opinion from a spectator:
>>This word war will never end if you dont stop
>>comparing singers....and please leave Through The Rain
>>behind.... it's so 2 years ago.
>>Through the Rain is one of Mariah's most difficult
>>The song itself is not as high as the previous songs
>>Mariah did. In fact, the climax of the song is a
>>repetitious loop of the the same series of notes
>>althroughout with slight deviations when she pulls the
>>word "I" and "through" on the last chorus. Otherwise,
>>its a fairly average song.
>>What made the song difficult is the way it was
>>composed. And what style of singing Mariah had in
>>Now, any "sane" singer will not try to copy Mariah's
>>every note, melissma and deviations to pull that song
>>through. For sure any singer who tries to sing that
>>will gasp for air and end up choking with the notes.
>>When Mariah recorded that did you really think that
>>the end product was a result of one take? They tried
>>to select segments of every take which sounded good to
>>come up with one patch of TTR.
>>For sure in every take Mariah would have sung it
>>differently in some way.
>>Mariah's voice conceals the choking when she sings
>>live because her voice has the natural husky texture.
>>The "piyok" comes in naturally.
>>Regine's voice is rather plain, and has a thinner
>>pitch. If she chokes on a note, it won't be left
>>Mariah has innovative ways of singing it. She can
>>skip the bridge and just whistle. She uses a gospel
>>choir to add more power. When she sings it
>>straight... it doesnt sound all too different from the
>>original. All because it was designed for her voice
>>Regine sings it the way she hears it. That can
>>sometimes be a problem. Her rendition is
>>remarkable.... considering that it's live... we know
>>she can hit the notes... but as one said... its not
>>the notes hit... its the quality. When you are
>>gasping for breath just to prove that you can hit them
>>all... it's not worth it. It compromises the beauty of
>>Rachel.... sang it probably a fet lower. Unnoticable
>>lower. Actually, she started it on the same key as
>>Mariah's. the shifting is where she moved a fet or 2
>>lower than the Original version. Nice move for the
>>arranger. Now Rachel moves on a comfort zone... a
>>place where she sounds great and eventually creates an
>>illusion that she hit the same note... so easily.
>>It's not fair to compare Rachel and Regine... or
>>Regine and Mariah.
>>They have different styles and techniques.
>>One thing is for sure... Regine can hit Mariah
>>notes.... not Rachel
>>BUT..... Regine is not meant to sing Mariah songs....
>>it just doesnt qualify... She just sounds tired and
>>offbeat and or too streched when she adjusts to
>>Mariah's style. Their vocal dynamics are far
>>different. I want to make it clear that this is not a
>>basis of who is the better singer, rather it helps
>>determine what material a singer should choose to
>>If you relize that the material doesnt sound good when
>>you do it... better leave it to someone who can do it
>>better. Regine can do better Streisand and Carpenter
>>Songs than Mariah....... but Mariah can do Franklin
>>and La Belle better than Regine.
>>Rachel... on the other hand is a very talented singer
>>who is yet to discover the muscal path she wants to
>I'm very sorry to reply to your quite a year old
>message but I just want to stress some points here if
>you don't mind and please don't get mad at me.
>For me, in my own opinion and para sa akin lang, there
>is no best singer in the Philippines and in this
>world, not Mariah, not Rachelle Ann nor Sarah and not
>even Miss Regine Velasquez but none other than
>Lucifer, the head of the heavenly choir with the
>angelic voice who fell down right into the Abyss.
>Anyone who surpasses the latter in singing can be
>called the next Queen of Hell. As it is written, pride
>goes before a destruction.
>For me, in my own opinion and para sa akin lang,
>Rachelle is not the best but she is good in and out
>because she fears God and was brought up very well by
>her good family. She knows how to look back or
>lumingon sa kanyang pinanggalingan and as a proof, she
>even guested in one of Regine's mall shows. Also, as a
>witness, I've seen and felt her true humility,
>kindness and benevolence. Furthermore, she always does
>acknowledge Regine's reigning power, highness and
>royalty in singing especially whenever she has a
>get-together with her fans.
>She also pays due respect to Mariah. For me, as a
>respect, she rendered a lower version of TTR so as to
>have a different attack on the last part of the song
>when she sang it on S4AS grand finals and just to show
>that Mariah is far better off than her. On the
>contrary, I beg to disagree, though, that she can't
>reach any of Mariah's notes in any of her songs, if
>that's what you're pointing at(but if not, I apologize
>and stand corrected in advance). If you haven't heard
>her sing Never Too Far yet, well then I think you
>should. She always does it her own style(without
>ruining the song-still sounds great) and in that song,
>she did a twist on the last note by whistling instead
>of hitting it with a usual falsetto(she's the only one
>I heard who did that live-she didn't undergo submerged
>vocalization training in the sea or drum filled with
>water-could be the reason why she easily gets tired
>when singing but it just comes out naturally-I mean
>her vocal prowess- add to that, she even has a heart
>ailment problem, I guess). She also plays the drums,
>dances like a pro and even strums the guitar. So, you
>were right in mentioning that she is quite talented
>and so she is a talent to reckon with. All of these
>talents were God-given and she's just sharing them
>with us to inspire us, especially me. I'm not bragging
>about these but just informing you the truth.
>For me, in my own opinion and para sa akin lang, Miss
>Regine Velasquez is so proud of her daughters, Sarah,
>Rachelle and Jonalyn(I hope Viva would come up with a
>concert of Regine having the three princesses as
>guests in one enormous venue). On the other hand, for
>me again, I believe Rachelle gives back all the glory
>to God, will forever be grateful to Miss Regine and
>Miss Mariah with all due respect and will always
>acknowledge the one and only Asia's Songbird's
>supremacy in the music industry, like forever.
>Finally, for me again, I "reiterate", para sa akin
>lang po, nobody's perfect and no one is the best, no
>not one, only GOD. May God bless you all and peace be
>with you. If you even have the slightest thought of
>reacting to the last few words, don't even blink or
>you might have alraedy been blasted off in hell.:)
Hehehe... great reply... really appreciate it. I also stand corrected... yes I heard rachelle hit higher notes...
And after all this discussion.... it really is just a matter of preference....
I mean..you know, regine and mariah have nothing to prove na.... Mariah's glory days are like over a decade ago... all when her voice was young and vibrant. Everything fades away. Mortensen mentioned that regine has a regular show.. and all.... that's true. And it also has taken its toll. The voice quality is now different.
Mariah may not have regular shows, but hell she's been on tour... would tour for how may years...over a decade as well... I believe that's as taxing or even worse.
Some may like regine better than Mariah or otherwise. That's a matter of choice...
rachelle... on the other hand is getting better and better..
so does Sarah... give the girl some props. Damn, I heard her sing the greatest love of all... and I have to swear its the best version from a pinoy artist that I have ever heard of.
Filipino musicians will always be some of the best in the world.
Christmas is nearing.... does any of the artits mentioned above have an upcoming CChristmas album?
Mariah is coming up of a re-issue of Merry Christmas with addt'l DVD tracks.
Peace lang and enjoy the music.
