Martin talks of babies, Pops and a new CD

Martin Nievera has a lot going on in his life right now. He has a
new CD of OPM songs out, his girlfriend Katrina Ojeda is expecting a
baby boy in November, and, to top it all off, his ex-wife singer
Pops Fernandez is on the cover and in the pages of racy men's
magazine FHM and everyone wants to know his take on that.
At the press launch of his CD Awit ng Puso, the singer, known for
his candidness got the ball rolling when he mentioned the magazine
cover.
"Someone forwarded a shot of the cover using his camera phone to me.
Since the image wasn't very clear, I didn't know what she was
wearing or if she was wearing [anything at all]."
For a good portion of the afternoon, Mr. Nievera talked about how
his ex-wife wouldn't have appeared on the cover if they had still
been together and how he was the one who had told their two teenaged
sons about the upcoming feature.
"I didn't want them to find out from their classmates."
When talk turned to his current partner and the baby they were
planning to name Santino, he was excited but adamant about not
getting married again "just because."
"The baby is long overdue. [Ms. Ojeda] has always wanted to have a
baby. She even said that even if things didn't work out between us,
she still wanted a baby because this way she would have a piece of
me with her."
After a good 30 minutes of shooting the breeze, Mr. Nievera went on
to talk about the new album that he said was recorded and mixed in
less than a week. He said the timetable for releasing a new album
all depends on his recording company, EMI Music Philippines.
Awit ng Puso is the follow-up to his 2005 release, When Love Is
Gone, which recently went platinum (20,000 copies sold). He will
receive a plaque celebrating the album's platinum status on the ABS-
CBN variety show ASAP on Sunday.
Mr. Nievera, who grew up in America and has never lost his twang,
said that of the six Tagalog songs in the 14-track CD, he had the
hardest time with "May Minamahal" and "Sana'y Maghintay Ang Walang
Hanggan." "Nabulol talaga ako (I was tongue-tied)," he said.
The other tracks include "Kahit Na," "Without You" and "I Think I'm
in Love" - songs popularized by Zsazsa Padilla, Joey Albert and Kuh
Ledesma, respectively. Nonoy Zuniga's "Love without Time" and Rey
Valera's "Sinasamba Kita" are also on the list.
"The guys from EMI were the ones who decided on the final list of
songs to be included in the CD but I personally picked the
songs 'When I Met You' and 'You.'"
The official launch of Awit ng Puso will be held on Aug. 13, 4 p.m.,
at The Block, SM North EDSA.
