HOW DARE 'MOTHER' RICKY MAKE POPS CRY!

MANILA, November 9, 2005 (STAR) FUNFARE By Ricardo F. Lo - Beauty guru Ricky Reyes (a.k.a. Mother Ricky) is hosting a new weekly show, simply called Mother Ricky, which premieres on Sunday, Nov. 13, on QTV Channel 11 (GMA 7’s newly-opened sister station), 10 to 11 a.m. Guests on the maiden episode are Evangeline Pascual and Pops Fernandez who is shown in the show’s teaser crying.

So why did Ricky make Pops cry?

"I don’t know," said Ricky. "I only asked her a very personal question and before I knew it, she was crying and crying."

Asked what "very personal question" it was, Ricky begged off, which is his way of inviting viewers to stay tuned and find out for themselves.

"Actually," disclosed Ricky, "I made several other people cry, not only Pops."

Among them are his guests in succeeding episodes, including Annabelle Rama (who will talk about her memorable childhood during which her head was shaved clean by her mother) and Lolit Solis (who choked with emotion when Ricky asked her about how her late mother, a movie fan, would have felt now that Lolit is a star in her own right; Lolit up to now grieves for her mom who died many years ago); and German Moreno with Perla Adea and husband Romy Mallari, and Lito Calzado (who also shed copious tears).

No, Mother Ricky (the show) is not a soap opera (even if the guests flood the studio in tears) but a "beauty show," very much like Ricky’s previous shows like Beauty School and Beauty School Plus. Segments of his QTV show include Life and Style, WE: Women Entrepreneur, Mader’s Mader, Gandang Ricky Reyes and Mader’s Heart.

"In the Mader’s Mader segment," said Ricky (the only one who could make Gloria Romero agree to be a poster girl for enduring beauty – as one of the Gandang Ricky Reyes models), "we will feature lolas whom we’ll make over. Watch the lolas being ‘re-invented’ via the magic of makeup and hairstyling."

According to the beauty guru (who started his TV-hosting career in 1982 when he guested on Telearalan, hosted by Cecille Garrucho; he was so good and so effective as guest that his one-shot stint was extended to two months), there’s no age limit for being beautiful.

"When a woman reaches the age of 45, she should do everything to look good. With the advances in cosmetics, even a woman of 70 can look sexy. Attitude and values in life also help a lot in enhancing the beauty of a woman."

That’s why on Mother Ricky, the beauty guru asks his guests not only about their beauty regimen (and/or "secrets") but also about their family background, digging as much as he can into their past and, in the process, make them cry.

"My guests still look beautiful even when they cry," assured Ricky.

Yes, even if their eye-liner runs a bit.

Crying beauties, they are.

Ricky Lo: Stripped
Article posted June 27, 2006
http://www.igma.tv/article.php?articleid=6637

Showbiz Stripped is GMA's late night showbiz show that aims to delve into showbiz's deepest, darkest secrets. Nothing is off limits to writer and showbiz authority Ricky Lo, who has made it his goal to talk about the unseen side of showbiz, whether it be good or bad, happy or sad. What's important is that he satisfies the public's right to know about stars both favorite and forgotten.

We had the good fortune of sitting down with the esteemed columnist and finding out what has kept audiences glued to Showbiz Stripped every Saturday night.

iGMA: What do you enjoy most about working on Showbiz Stripped?

Ricky Lo: Aside from talking to the stars, it's discovering that TV is an exciting form of journalism. It's very visual. In print, you can do your article in your shorts. On TV, you have to dress up, you have to look good, you have to sound good. You think of so many things, aside from just delivering the news. That's what makes it very exciting.

iGMA: Do you enjoy hosting a TV show more than writing?

Ricky Lo: I enjoy writing more than TV because print is my line. I can do it with my eyes closed. I'm not yet so comfortable with TV. I'm learning how to go with the flow.

iGMA: How do you find your stories for Showbiz Stripped?

Ricky Lo: It's the staff that comes up with the concept, though I do give them suggestions. 90% of the conceptualization comes from the staff. They're very resourceful, very imaginative.

iGMA: What's been your favorite episode?

Ricky Lo: There's the one on the bold stars of the 60's, 70's and what has happened to them. Most of them are leading miserable lives. Some of them have found God. They're so bitter about life but they're moving on. Some of them look back to their glory days with nostalgia, but not with bitterness. That's the good thing about it. Life goes on and they are moving on in spite of the troubles in their lives.

iGMA: What can the audience look forward to in succeeding episodes?

Ricky Lo: There's our part of four-episode anniversary package. It's an episode about the misfortunes in showbiz and about destiny. Our resource persons are stars who have gone through trials just like Darius Razon, whose children died within a year of each other. His only two children died tragically. One was killed in a fire and one recently was killed in a car
accident. The other guest is Vandolph and he will talk about his being accident-prone. He was in a coma for one month after an accident in Baguio four years ago. Three years after that, his car fell into a ditch, and he survived these two accidents. Angel Locsin also survived the death of her boyfriend and her father went blind and she survived that also. And also Jackie Forster, who survived a bad marriage and the tragedy that met the birth of her son three weeks ago who contacted pneumonia and who had to stay in an incubator for seven days, but she's okay now. She's surviving the ordeals in her personal and professional life. It's something to look forward to.

iGMA: What topics would you want to feature in future episodes?

Ricky Lo: Actually, we have so many ideas, mostly positive. The thrust of the show is not confrontational. It's mostly bringing out the positive side of the stars. We're going to talk about issues that don't pit them against each other. They are given the chance to air their side in a style that doesn't bring out the bad side them. It's more on the positive side of the stars. I have so many ideas about stars in business, stars committed to God, stars who have been there for forty years and what their secret of durability is. We have so many topics in mind.

iGMA: Any last words for your fans?

Ricky Lo: I hope they go on watching Showbiz Stripped. It's an alternative kind of showiz show. It's not a talk show. It's more of a showbiz docu. It shows the good side of showbiz.

You can keep abreast of these exciting future episodes by watching
Showbiz Stripped, every Saturday on GMA.

What’s Pops trying to prove?
from FUNFARE by Ricardo F. Lo
Philippine Star, Aug. 10, 2006

You have to take a second, hard look at the cover of the latest issue of FHM magazine to realize that – yes, indeed – it’s Pops Fernandez you’re staring at with incredulity. Her face has been so "chiseled" (digitally-enhanced?) that Pops didn’t look like the Pops that you and I have known all these years. "She’s all lips," commented Abante columnist Jojo Gabinete. I agree. Pops must have done something to her lips (salamat po, Dr. Vicki Belo?) in an effort to look like Angelina Jolie, just like what some local actresses are also doing.

Turn to the inside pages and your eyes will pop out in disbelief. Is this the Pops that we used to know, short of baring intimate parts of the body she had taken so much care of not to show? What has gotten into her pretty head to pose in this manner expected only of bold stars starving for public attention? What is she trying to prove?

On national television, Pops tried to justify her "coming out of the cocoon" by encouraging women like her, pushing 40, to show that they have still bodies to die for and are still desirable. Could you imagine how long the queue of women-pushing-40 would form to the FHM office if women her age followed Pops’ "well-meaning" piece of advice? Have you ever wondered how the adolescent children of women-pushing-40 would feel seeing their moms in such state of undress in a glossy magazine pictorial? Wouldn’t they get into a fight being teased in school?

If you ask me, I prefer the old, wholesome Pops Fernandez who, even without making a splash on the pages of FHM, still attracted guys much younger men, including Troy Montero, Piolo Pascual, Brad Turvey, Jacques Dupasquier and Jomari Yllana (oops? did I miss out a name?), compared to ex-husband Martin Nievera who has been linked to only one girl, Katrina Ojeda (set to deliver their first child, a boy, in October).

Pops’ FHM derring-do reminds me of Hollywood good girl Meg Ryan who self-destructed when she went daring and baring in the movie In the Cut after she broke up with Russell Crowe. Fans, me included, loved to see Meg Ryan with clothes on and not in bed au naturel with a man. I’m not saying Pops has gone that far; I just feel that the effect on her fans (me included) by her FHM (mis)adventure is the same as that of Meg Ryan’s drastic change of image.

Oh, well, I guess Pops got the attention that she must have (desperately?) wanted. But was it worth it?

Showbiz Predictions for 2006

I am an avid reader of Ricky Lo, The Philippine Star's resident entertainment writer. I have to admit that his views and commentary are very objective despite his affiliations (with GMA-7 and Philippine Star). And every year, he writes down some predictions for the local entertainment scene. After one year, let us all see which of his predictions will come true and which ones did not.

http://www.accesspinoy.net/blog/post/01030601.asp

Pops Fernandez will remain loveless. Her supposed "thing" with Jomari Yllana is just that – a "thing," a passing fancy.

Mga Halu-Halong Hula-Hula, Year 2006
FUNFARE By Ricardo F. Lo
The Philippine Star 12/30/2005

It's again the time of year when manghuhula of all shapes and sizes, of varying degrees of credibility or lack of it, seem to descend on the scene from out of nowhere armed with endless lists of what-might-be's, some of them polluting television projecting an air of false authority.

At the risk of sounding like a broken record, I'm again reminding you (as I always do as each year ends) that telling the fortune of the stars is as easy as counting the stars in heaven (be careful, though, that you don't suffer from stiff neck).

As I've been saying, you don't have to wear a turban and shuffle cards or caress a crystal ball to find out what the stars (in heaven) have in store for the stars (here on earth). All you have to do is religiously monitor movie columns (like this one), read movie mags and tabs, and watch showbiz-oriented talk shows (Showbiz Stripped, Startalk, The Buzz, S-Files and ETK) without fail and, voila, manghuhula ka na! That easy.

I,one of pops supporter since she started in showbiz knows about this abunda was the evil person behind all this things.

NOTE: The Music Inside Buzz has long posted that the Pops-Jomari
relationship is just a showbiz created one. And due to that "fact"
I also personally believe that Ricky Lo is not telling the truth
about the person being a real Pops fan. At least not from any of
the Pops yahoo groups who all know by now about Ricky Lo and Boy
Abunda's connection to the problems Pops and Martin are always
having together due to their systematic posting of intrigues and
rumors about their personal lives. Also I believe Ricky Lo is
reading the postings being shared by Pops fans on their yahoo
groups. Though I'm not any of the moderators of the Pops fans
yahoo groups I will on behalf of all GOOD, decent and caring
Pops fans take it upon myself to DISOWN knowing there is such
a Pops fan who wrote to Ricky Lo as such among us in the groups.
-mmJun >:-/ Sure many wrote him. To flame him as he deserved!

If Martin Nievera can be happy, why can’t his ex-wife Pops Fernandez?

If Martin can have a baby with his girlfriend Katrina Ojeda (due to
deliver a boy named Santino in November in Las Vegas where she is
based), why can’t Pops have one by boyfriend Jomari Yllana (whose ex-
wife Aiko Melendez delivered her first child with husband Martin
Jickain last July 28)?

But first, Pops will have to marry Jomari before they can have a baby
and not the other way around.

The good news is that if and when Jomari proposes to Pops tonight
when she hosts an "intimate" birthday party for him, she will
definitely say "Yes, I will!" and proceed to say "Yes, I do!" during
their church wedding (the second for both).

This piece of good news was relayed to Funfare by Pops’ unnamed fan,
accompanied by the undated photo that goes with this story. Funfare
wishes to thank the Pops fan for this "scoop."

"Pops is madly in love with Jomari," the unnamed fan told
Funfare. "She promises that Jomari will be the last man in her life."

I wonder, could the fan be the same person sending me the ascerbic e-
mail (in reaction to my piece criticizing Pops for doing that "bold"
pictorial for FHM magazine)? Thanks for those bile words, too, and
may God bless you!
