BODY  TALK  WITH  MARTIN  NIEVERA

MANILA, July 8, 2005 (STAR) FUNFARE By Ricardo F. Lo - In his latest album (released by EMI Music Philippines), When Love Is Gone, Martin Nievera shares songs for the broken-hearted (like him?), such as Hanggang Langit, Goodbye, Nasaan Ka Man, Naghihintay, Never Said Goodbye, Before You Say Goodbye and the carrier single, When Love Is Gone.

I’m sure it will be a hit like his previous albums. So instead of letting him talk about the ho-hum subject of how his heart got broken and got mended (by somebody other than his ex-wife Pops Fernandez), Funfare asked Martin to talk about his body and how he takes care of it. I know you’re eager to eavesdrop, so without much ado, here’s Martin from head to foot.

What sort of diet do you follow?

"I only have two meals a day, taken at lunch and early evening before six. After six o’clock, I’m not supposed to eat anything anymore. I try not to eat late at night but if I get hungry I take soup. I eat meat only once a week. I eat anything but I try to avoid sweets and it’s such a sacrifice for me because I have a sweet tooth and I love cookies, ice cream, cakes and pies."

You mentioned once that you have favorite cookies.

"Oh, I love oatmeal cookies."

What sort of workout do you do?

"When I’m on the road I make sure that there’s a gym where I can work out twice a week. No lifting of heavy weights; just light workout. I relax at the steam room for my voice. It keeps my throat lubricated and loose and I sing better."

Are cold drinks bad for the vocal cords (as some singers believe)?

"Cold drinks are okay with me; they’re not bad. I take cold drinks all the time when I’m onstage."

Do you take anything for your voice?

"I take hot Phi Pak Kua or hot tea with lemon before a show. But during a show, it’s all cold stuff."

What’s your favorite drink?

"Orange juice."

How much liquid (water) do you take per day?

"I don’t drink enough water and that’s my problem. I take only as many as five glasses."

What vitamins (and minerals) do you take?

"A lot! I also take one that improves my memory; it’s called...oh my God, I forget what it’s called!"

How much sleep do you get per night?

"Not enough. I’m always traveling and jet-lagging. I just came back from our family vacation in the States so I’m trying to sleep early. If I can get eight hours of sleep a night, great! But seven hours are good enough for me."

Don’t you suffer from sleep disorder from all that traveling?

"I should but I don’t. What I do is sleep a lot on the plane where I spend all my quiet time. I write on the plane, I listen to music on the plane."

How do you deal with jet lag?

" I don’t. I just pretend that I don’t have it."

What part of your body is your favorite?

"None. I hate my body. I don’t like looking at myself in the mirror. My waist is too high, my stomach should be more trim, my chest could be tighter and my arms...Oh yes, my arms. I like my arms. All the girls who have seen my body, they like my arms."

What part of a girl’s body do you look at first?

"The teeth. And the feet."

What part of your body do you think needs some improvement?

"My whole body." (He weighs 180 lbs., tucked up in his 5’8" frame.)

How do you cope with stress?

"Unfortunately, I don’t cope with it very well, that’s why I have hypertension."

Do you take any medicine for it?

"Yes, Norvasc and something else. Hypertension runs on both sides of my family."

Is your sugar level okay?

"Yes, it is. But my cholesterol level is a bit high. Blood pressure used to be high but it has normalized."

How do you pamper yourself?

"I get a massage, not in the spa (which I hate) but at home. I hire somebody to jump all over my back and pull my legs. Sometimes, I wrestle with my sons (Ram and Robin) in bed."

What’s your favorite city?

"Venice. And Santonini in Greece which my family and I visited during our recent Mediterranean cruise."

What other places did you visit during the cruise?

"Athens, Barcelona, Rome, Istanbul, etc. We spent 12 days at sea. I usually get seasick and not during the cruise."

Did you share a cabin with Pops?

"No. We shared cabins with our kids but never just the two of us."

But I heard that you slept together once.

"We did in the same cabin but not on separate beds. There were two beds in every cabin."

Do separated couples get intimate in such a situation?

"It’s hard to be intimate even for married couples with the children around."

If there were just the two of you...

"...Baka puede pa!"

What’s the last thing you do before you go to sleep?

"I sleep alone – most of the time. The last thing I do is have a conversation with God. I talk to Him."

What do you tell God?

"I ask Him for guidance, for answers."

And what’s the first thing you do when you wake up?

"I crack my bones – my neck, my back. I do some stretching right in my room and then have a cup of coffee."

How do you cope with lonely nights?

"I watch old movies on DVD. Action films. Bruce Willis films. Jerry Bruckheimer films. I watched other films, like Bruce Almighty (starring Jim Carrey)."

Did you say that you both cried when you and Pops, along with the kids, watched Bruce Almighty together?

"Yes, we both cried on the same part of the movie where Jennifer Aniston was talking to God, begging Him to help her stop loving Bruce. I cried because I knew that Pops said the same prayer a long time ago."

In one scene, Bruce/Jim knelt on the highway, asking God for a sign, and he was run over by a truck. Have you done something stupid like that in real life?

"I did. I tried to drive (the car I gave her on her birthday) through a 10-wheeler truck. I was crying. Maybe it wasn’t my time because the truck wasn’t there. Or maybe I moved the steering wheel at the right minute. I was driving at 180 mph. When I came to, I scolded myself. ‘What are you doing? Don’t you want to see your kids grow up?’ I was wondering then if Pops would rush to my side in case I met an accident. It happened eight years ago when Pops and I just broke up."

Are you vain just like most good-looking guys?

"I’m not. But I don’t want to stink so I’m always drowning in cologne. My favorite cologne is Gendarme. If I hold one person responsible for my vanity, it would be Bong Bella of Symetria. He has been changing my look, from my clothes to my nose, for the last 10 years. He is the better side of me. Interested? You can contact Bong Bella at Symetria Salon, No. 53 Connecticut St., Greenhills (tel. no. 744-6355)."

Name three women you think have beautiful bodies.

"I think Pops has a nice body. Pops has a cute little butt. Halle Berry. Aubrey Miles."

And three guys...

"I don’t pay attention to a guy’s body but let me see...I always admire guys with nice abs which I don’t have, like Edu Manzano, Carlos Agassi and Marc Nelson."

Using body language, how would you make a woman know that you like/admire her?

"My problem is I’m very transparent. Yes, I look at her lips. When you look at a woman’s lips, she’ll know that you want more than just conversation."
