POPS FERNANDEZ and I go a long way back. That’s why her birthday is as significant to me as my own. If she hadn’t been born, my life would have been half-empty. We don’t see or talk to each other everyday but we’re sure that we are forever in each other’s corner.
During her intimate birthday bash at Quisine last Friday, it felt so good to “re-bond” with Pipay. Only her closest friends in and out of show biz were at the party thrown for her by another good friend, Gretchen Barretto. It wasn’t just a birthday celebration but also a rekindling of friendships that have withstood changes and intrigues. Also at the party were Martin Nievera (her best friend, first and foremost), Liezl and Alyanna Martinez, Joyce Jimenez, Rowell and Randy Santiago, Rudy Fernandez, John Lapus, Raymund Isaac and Tim Yap among others.
Her rumored beau, Jomari Yllana, was nowhere in sight. When I teased Pipay about Jom, she just giggled “You talaga! Tanungin pa ba ako?” Are they or aren’t they? That’s

not for me to say. But the twinkle in Pipay’s eyes is more than enough indication that her heart is all-smiles again. The magic’s gone when you know where it’s coming from. So as a birthday gift to Pipay, let’s leave the Jom mystique as it is.
I enjoyed chatting with Gretchen. She had her equally beautiful daughter Dominique in tow. Of course the love of her life, Tonyboy, was present. Theirs is such a sweet and serene kind of love. Even when they were seated at separate tables, you could feel them exchange loving glances across the room. Gretch leads a charmed life but she hasn’t lost sight of her struggling years in show biz. She readily agreed to pose for the billboards of Marcella (owned by our common friend, Beth Co) gratis et amore for old time’s sake. “Beth provided me with all my accessories when I could not afford to buy my own so I’m more than happy to be her image model again,” Gretch said. “Anything for an old friend.”
Daboy has put the Japan brouhaha behind him, it was clear as he partied on. True to form, John Lapus made everybody laugh when he announced that Pipay’s party was super “sosi” ‘cause it was the first time he tasted of caviar. Joyce is on vacation from studies in Australia. My kumareng Liezl and hijada Alyanna are beginning to look a lot like sisters instead of mother and daughter.
Martin gamely serenaded Pops and they also did a duet. It was such a joy to see them truly at peace with each other. Nothing show biz. They are back to where they started from—friendship, this time with more candor and honesty. Martin kidded Pops, “What song should I sing to you tonight? Hmm… Sexual Healing?” They sang “How Do You Keep the Music Playing?” And you could tell that they have found the answer. Martin’s gift to Pops was a video ipod. He told me that it’s the one with the largest memory capacity. But for sure it’s still not enough to store the wealth of all their memories.
Happy, happy birthday, my beloved Pipay!
