Body Talk with Pops Fernandez
By Ricardo F. Lo
The Philippine Star 02/10/2006
"Its always an honor to perform with her," said Pops Fernandez of Kuh Ledesma with whom shes co-starring in the Valentine concert Lets Talk About Love slated for Feb. 13 and 14 at The Captains Bar of Mandarin Oriental Hotel. "After all, she is the Kuh Ledesma. The first time I worked with her in Power of Two in 1999, I was nervous. Siempre, Kuh Ledesma yan! She was already Kuh Ledesma when I started in showbiz. My idol!"
Their two-night show may be titled so but Pops would rather not talk about love, except to make brief comments about certain issues shes currently involved in but isnt aware of the media to-do about them because, said Pops, "I have stopped reading the papers because the tsismis only puts so much stress on me."
But what is the real score between her and Jomari Yllana?
"Well, I admit we are dating but thats as far as our relationship goes at the moment," said Pops. "Im more careful about going into a serious relationship. Lets just say that Im enjoying what we have at the moment. I enjoy being single. No commitment. Its nice to have a choice."
Does being called a "Bagets Killer" affect her (because before Jomari, she was romantically linked to Piolo Pascual and Brad Turvey who are also younger than her)?
"I should be flattered," she replied tongue-in-cheek. "Biro mo, Im still attractive to younger men. Not all women my age are."
Pops stands 55", keeps her weight "a secret," measures 35-25-36, and wears XS shirts and size 7.5 shoes.
How do you take care of your voice?
"Before a show, I try to sleep early. Lack of sleep can adversely affect your vocal chords. I drink lots of water, but not cold."
Why, is cold water (or any kind of drink) bad for the voice?
"With me, it is, although with some people its not. I know some singers who take ice-cream after a performance."
How many hours before a concert do you refrain from talking?
"Ideally, dapat several hours before. I try not to talk but its so hard not to. When youre stressed, talk ka nang talk, di ba? When you talk, you use one set of vocal chords and when you sing, you use a different set of vocal chords."
What kind of food is good for the voice?
"I dont know. But I dont eat before a show so that I wont feel heavy. What I do is eat a heavy lunch, enough to last until after a performance."
Do you follow a regular diet?
"No, I dont. But I take very little rice. I try not to eat so much meat because I dont burn it well. When I was on a diet, I ate very little during weekdays but on Sundays I gave myself a break and I overeat; lahat ng bawal kinakain ko."
How much liquid do you take every day?
"They say that you have to take at least eight glasses of water a day. But I take only about three. Its bad because water is good for you. But I dont get thirsty, eh!"
Do you apply anything on your face?
"At night, moisturizer. During the day, sunblock."
What kind of workout do you do?
"I used to play badminton with my kids (Ram and Robin) because its more fun. But not lately because Im so busy."
Do you take vitamins and/or minerals?
"I take multi-vitamins and stresstabs."
How much sleep do you get per night?
"On a normal day, five hours. Thats pretty long for me. Even if I sleep late, I still wake up early.
How do you cope with stress?
"You know, stress can cause a lot of illnesses, so I try not to stress myself out. Its hard to do that in a stressful field like showbiz. Since lately Ive been in the news again, I avoid reading the papers so I wont get stressed out."
How do you relax?
"I stay home and watch TV with my kids. Or we eat out. On very rare occasions, I cook. Pero very rare yan."
What do you cook for Jomari?
"None! Id rather not...Baka matakot yon at hindi kainin."
Whats your favorite hideaway (or city)?
"Actually, none. My home is my favorite hideaway. Once home with my kids, I always tell myself, This is real! and that gives me a lot of comfort."
What part of your body is your favorite?
"My butt. Nice daw, sabi nila. Its original."
What part of your body is most vulnerable?
"My skin. Thats why even if I like the sun, I try to avoid it. My skin is very sensitive. A little scratch can turn into a big rash."
What part of your body do you think needs some improvement?
"My thighs. Medyo malalaki."
What part of a guys body do you look at first?
"His eyes. You can tell what kind of a person one is just by looking him straight in the eye."
Whats your favorite sleeping wear?
"Pajamas."
Whats the last thing that you do before you go to sleep?
"I pray."
And the first thing that you do when you wake up?
"I thank God for a new day."
Name three men you think have nice bodies.
"Brad Pitt. Marc Nelson. Johnny Depp."
And three women...
"Angelina Jolie. Jennifer Aniston. Gina Alajar who, I think, knows how to take care of her body. Everytime I see Gina, shes the same. She doesnt seem to grow old."
Using body language, how would you make a guy know that you admire/like him?
"I try not to talk to him because I get dyahe. I cant look at him. I just steal glances at him."
