ROCK BANDS RULED AT THE FIRST-ever MYX Music Awards, held at Onstage in Greenbelt Makati on Tuesday.

Leading the pack was Cueshé, which romped away with Favorite Song (for “Stay”), Artist and Group.

Rivermaya topped two categories—Music Video and Media Soundtrack, both for “You’ll Be Safe Here,” theme song of the ABS-CBN series “Spirits,” directed by Chito Roño.

If there’s a Kapamilya vibe in this awards show, it’s because MYX is the music video channel of ABS-CBN.

Other Kapamilya winners were “ASAP” performers Rachelle Ann Go and Erik Santos, who won Favorite Female and Male Artists, respectively, and fellow champion Mark Bautista, who won Favorite Remake for “I Need You.”

Still, it wasn’t a purely Kapamilya affair, with GMA-7’s Yasmien Kurdi bringing home the New Artist honors.

Megastar Sharon Cuneta received the first MYX Magna Award—a lifetime achievement honor.

“I was so grateful that a music authority like MYX chose me as their first-ever Magna awardee,” Cuneta told Inquirer Entertainment. “It was also a thrill that a whole new generation of fans were being introduced to my music and that my entire 30-year music career was cited.”

Christopher de Leon, Jaya, Nyoy Volante, Top Suzara, Nikki Gil and Kurdi serenaded Cuneta with a medley of her songs.

Other winners: Sandwich, Indie Artist; Sponge Cola’s “KLSP,” Rock Video; Gloc 9’s “Tula,” Urban Video; Rachelle Ann Go’s “From the Start,” Mellow Video; Christian Bautista and Nina’s “Burn,” Collaboration; MYMP, Live Performance; and Pussycat Dolls’ “Don’t Cha,” International Music Video.

A few awards sounded strange—Favorite Ringtone (MYMP’s “Tell Me Where It Hurts”) and Guest Appearance in a Music Video (Anne Curtis in Mark Bautista’s “I Need You”).

Presenters were led by Ryan Cayabyab, Pops Fernandez, Precious Lara Quigaman, Eula Valdez, Jett Pangan, Keanna Reeves and Budoy.

The event was hosted by MYX veejays Luis Manzano, Heart Evangelista, Iya Villania, Karel Marquez, Geoff Eigenmann and Nikki Gil.
