What really keeps Pops going
Balita.com. June 24, 2006
LOS ANGELES—Pops Fernandez has been hailed as the “Concert Queen” for many years now. But one has to wonder what or who has made this diva endure the test of time. “My two boys,” she answered simply.
And this was evident in the news conference Thursday at the Regal-Alhambra for her US tour with world-renowned pianist Jim Brickman, “Sending My Love by Heart.” There, standing at the side of the stage—awkwardly, as teens are expected to be—were her strapping sons Robin and Ram.
However, many in the audience seemed not totally convinced with her answer. Because who suddenly popped up in the back rows of the theater but her famous former husband, balladeer Martin Nievera.
It’s been only days since news broke of Martin is expecting a baby with girlfriend Katrina Ojeda—and no doubt broke the hearts of millions of the couple’s fans. Upon hearing the news, Pops—who for months has been involved with actor Jomari Yllana—reportedly wept.
But you wouldn’t know that last Thursday. “Wherever she goes, I go.” These were the words of Martin in explaining his unexpected appearance. Joining her ex onstage, Martin also informed the audience that he wrote a song for Pop’s newest album and the title couldn’t be more revealing: “Still in Love.” And, irrepressible as ever, Martin said he would be guesting in the concert with Brickman, which he described as “intimate,” while adding that the successful concert couple would still continue doing shows.
But perhaps the main reason for the audience being unconvinced is the evident spark that two exude when they are next to each other. And this elicited constant teasing by audience members, hopeless romantics. However, when asked about their status, Pops immediately said that they are “just good friends.”
Pops also said that despite her countless performances, she always strives for the continuous perfection of her craft. “Every performance is different, even if you are doing remakes, you have to put in your own touch. You always have to be creative and try to better yourself,” she said.
The event was sponsored by Western Union Financial Services Inc., the undisputed worldwide leader in money transfer services. Chelo Trapaga, Marketing Manager of Western Union, made a presentation illustrating the efficient and incomparable money sending service the company provides—and fast—15 minutes and it’s in the recipient’s account. And to prove how fast, Chelo presided over an entertaining “demo” featuring a middle-aged Filipino nanay, who was videotaped earlier in the day going into a Western Union office to send money to her son in the Philippines, who was celebrating his birthday that day. Now, while standing onstage, Nanay flipped open her cellphone and called her son, who, of course, confirmed that he already got the padala.
Western Union is the sponsor for the Pops Fernandez-Jim Brickman concert tour, which includes stops in Los Angeles (the Wilshire Ebell Theater on July 21) and San Diego (the United Artists-Horton Plaza 14 on July 23). There is also an up and coming concert on August 24 in Regal Hamilton in Atlantic City, New Jersey.
After the presentation, Pops performed her original love song, “Kaya Pala,” and midway through the song, Martin suddenly shouted: “Sing it babe!” Obviously this turned a lot of heads.
So the question remains: what really keeps Pops going?
