Pops and Jim
By Isah V. Red

Pops Fernandez has just finished the first leg of her US tour with
Jim Brickman, the American pop pianist whose renditions
of "Valentine" and "The Gift" made him a household name among
Filipinos with a penchant for melodramatic ditties.

Pop's US tour kicked off last July 21 at San Diego's Wilshire Ebell
Theatre and was followed by a performance at Wyndham Hotel in Los
Angeles last July 23, with Martin Nievera as special guest. More
shows are lined up for August and September in Atlantic City, Texas,
Washington, D.C., and Chicago. There is also a scheduled show in
Manila.

"It's my very first time to do a full show with Jim," Pops said. "I
was very thrilled with the idea when they told me about it. I'm a
big fan of Jim. I love his songs and I love singing them. I'm
actually doing a remake of one of his songs, `By Heart,' in my new
album.

"It was the people from Western Union who broached the idea of a
Pops/Jim collaboration," she added. "It's different from the other
shows that I've done in the States. It's definitely more intimate."

Pops is also wrapping up production work for her new album. "We only
have two more songs to work on," she said, "then it's up to the
recording company to choose what single they want."

Pops is very excited about her duet with son Robin. "This is a dream
come true!," she gushed. "I've always wanted a song from him, and
I've always looked forward to getting a first shot at singing it
professionally. He's a talented musician and a great artist, and
that's coming from a very proud mom. More than anything, I love that
duet we did for sentimental and emotional reasons. A mother and son
doing a song together—that's a first for me."
