Oops…THEY DID IT AGAIN!
By Josh Andowitt
Industry pundits were at first skeptical about the possibility of
having the Philippine true Concert Divas, Concert Queen Pops Fernandez
and Asia's Songbird Regine Velasquez, perform in one stage. The
skeptics even said that it would need heaven and earth to move for it
to happen. Well, Starmedia Entertainment's Ana Co Puno did just that.
She signed the two divas for a re-union of sort in a must see show
aptly titled, QUEENS ….ON FIRE!
The Queens On Fire tour first kicked off in San Diego on Friday, April
1 at the Jenny Craig Pavilion, University of San Diego and Saturday,
April 2, in Los Angeles at the Grand Olympic Auditorium. The continues
in Las Vegas on April 8 at the Sports Center, April 9 in San Francisco
at the Nob Hill Masonic, April 15 in Chicago at the Gateway Theater,
April 17 in Atlantic City at the Trump Taj Mahal Casino, April 23 in
Washington DC Armory and April 23 in Guam at the University of Guam
Field House.
After seeing the first certified sold out concert in San Diego and Los
Angeles, I am giving this concert TWO THUMBS UP - WAY UP! It is NOT
just a must see concert but A ONCE IN A LIFETIME EVENT! The 2004
Concert Producer of the Year, Starmedia's Ana Co Puno has done it
again! They have raised the bar and set another benchmark for other
producers to emulate. They have produced not only a show but also a
performance that is more than the price of the admission ticket!
Queens On Fire has given us all the bells and whistles we truly
deserve! From the costumes to the set design, the lights to the
visuals, the music and the well-thought-out numbers to the repertoire,
they are simply amazing! Even epicureans would agree that hard work
and labor of love were the driving force for an event of this magnitude.
Prince of Pop Erik Santos, Queens On Fire special guest, at first
looked nervous, tentative and overwhelmed yet once he opened his mouth
and sang, he owned the stage and wowed all of us! When he sang his
winning piece, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde's "This is the Moment," he has
definitely placed to rest any doubts as to why he was the 2003 Star in
a Million grand champion. His second song, I Believe I Can Fly, was so
enthralling that it not only made us listen but placed us in a trance
to believe we all can fly! As his manager, Boy Abunda would say,
"Mabuhay ka, Erik!"
Concert Queen Pops Fernandez should be accorded a new moniker. She
should not just be called the Concert Queen but the "Sexiest" Concert
Queen. Watching her groove, movesand strut made us wonder happily in a
daze and think how she can manage to be so sexy and devastatingly
beautiful after two kids.
Although more identified with dance tunes like her Beyonce medley of
Naughty Girl, Baby Boy, Lose My Breath and Crazy in Love, which she
delivered with much gusto, Pops' haunting interpretation of Wendy
Cornejo's Hanggang was truly exceptional. It was bursting with passion
that allowed us to reminisce the joys of one's immortal love. Her
interpretation not only tugged at the heart but penetrated the soul.
Asia's Songbird Regine Velasquez, like Pops, was at her best. She is
more known as a power belter and is excellent at singing ballads and
love songs, yet, in these shows, she was simply breathtaking. Her
interpretation of Fantasia Barrino's I Believe was astonishing. She
belted, as high as she could and for long as she wanted. One cannot
help but think how she, like Moet & Chandon's Dom Perignon Champagne,
can be so good after all these years!
Together both divas displayed their vintage personalities through
their latest recordings. Pops through her sincere rendition of You
Take My Breath Away and Regine through her lung busting Shine.
Their duets together of Christina Aquilera's Fighter, Bryan Adams'
Have You Ever Loved A Woman, Laura Brannigan's Power of Love, Cyndi
Lauper's Girls Just Wanna Have Fun, the hilarious Britney Spears'
Oops, I did it Again done Cabaret-style with touches of the Dolphy and
Panchito routine, and the unforgettable and refreshing "Fever" strip
tease number done while sitting on two chairs with heart-shaped backs
are just a few reasons that made Queens On Fire simply phenomenal!
Queens On Fire was mesmerizing and totally enchanting. Pops and Regine
are excellent reasons to miss the Philippines and be proud to be
Filipinos!
If you missed Starmedia Entertainment's QUEENS ON FIRE, you will miss
a must-see concert for the year 2005 and a once in a lifetime event.
Luckily, you can still catch them in Las Vegas on April 8 at the Las
Vegas Sports Center, April 9 in San Francisco at the Nob Hill Masonic,
April 15 in Chicago at the Gateway Theater , April 17 in Atlantic City
at the Trump Taj Mahal Casino, April 23 in Washington DC at the DC
Armory, and April 30 in Guam at the University of Guam Field House.
