Pops is moving on
DIRECTLINE By Boy Abunda
The Philippine Star 09/05/2003

Success came early for Pops Fernandez. As a daughter of the late action star Eddie Fernandez and the beautiful Dulce Lukban, local showbiz welcomed her with open arms. Her recordings of Just Say You Love Me, Little Star, and Don’t Say Goodbye, became certified hits. Penthouse Live with Martin Nievera made her a bigger, versatile star.

It was in 1983 with Folks Meet Pops, her first major concert at the Folk Arts Theater when she was catapulted to concert royalty. Big shows at the Araneta and Ultra followed. Her Always concert at the Rizal Football Stadium was sold out despite the rains. She became Concert Queen. She still sits on the throne unchallenged after two decades. Her Shindig concert was also expectedly a blockbuster that a live recording was done.

But Pops was not spared the pain and tears that go with success. When news of her break-up with Martin Nievera came out, many were devastated. After her annulment case with Martin was over, Pops bounced back and became more focused in her career. She made movies that showcased her maturity as an actress such as Linlang and Gusto Ko Ng Lumigaya. A new Pops emerged – daring, fearless and assertive. She also went comedic in Video King with Robin Padilla. On TV, she was awarded Best Musical Variety Show Female Host by Star Awards.

On her 20th anniversary celebration that also doubled as her birthday bash, Pops had Martin as special guest. The Pops-Martin tandem after all is still very much alive. The (un) couple Pops and Martin is scheduled to do a series of shows in the US in October and November.

Last July, Canadians experienced Pops’ powerful presence on stage. The show held at the 20,000-seater General Motors Place, home to NBA’s Vancouver Grizzlies, was a big hit.

Although hounded once in a while by intrigues in her career options and private life, Pops remains cool. She has managed to balance her various roles as artist, fashion designer, businesswoman and mother.

Recently, she introduced her own fashion collection called Pipay, named after one of her nicknames. She will open two stores soon which will cater to women of all ages. She is also slated to star in a new soap on GMA 7.

Pops returned to the concert stage for a one-night only engagement at the posh Makati Shangri-La-Manila last August. She performed classic tunes, Broadway hits and some of the most popular motion picture soundtracks. Homer Flores was musical director. The concert was produced by Maxi Media.
