I CAN’T BELIEVE IT,” POPS FERNANDEZ complained on Friday, referring to her ex-husband Martin Nievera’s remarks about her sexy pictures in For Him Magazine (FHM).
“He made those comments based on his feelings [alone],” she explained during a phone call to Inquirer Entertainment. “In a situation like this, and as my ex-husband, he should have kept his feelings to himself. If you’re a real gentleman, if you really care for your ex-partner, you won’t say anything that would hurt her.”
Pops said Martin’s comments hurt. She singled out the one that said, “She didn’t have to do that. If some Filipino painter did something of Pops, that’s for art’s sake. But FHM is not dealing with art... It’s suggestive. It’s great for kids going on puberty.”
“He’s always had a big month,” Pops retorted. “He doesn’t realize he hurts people. Everybody has an opinion. If you put those pictures in a fashion magazine, they would be seen in a different way. He’s right; I’m of age. Why I did it is another story.”
Pops said Martin could have told her face to face what he really felt.
“He should have asked when we were in the US,” Pops pointed out. “When someone sent him an SMS of the FHM cover, talk shows called him and asked for his comments. He asked me why I did it. I said, why not? I approved the pictures and the outfits.
“What he told me then was, ‘I trust you naman, and I know that you know what you’re doing. Why did he tell a different story in ‘The Buzz’ all of a sudden and, again, during a press con for his new album?
“If he had negative reactions, he should have told that to my face, not this way. He even said it was cool.
“Sana, his opinion when he’s in front of me, and his opinion when he’s being interviewed are one and the same.”
Pops claimed that she never made comments about Martin’s situations even when she was badgered by the entertainment press.
“I usually say I can’t answer that, it’s not my business,” said Pops. “During a press con, a lot of questions are thrown around. He doesn’t have to answer all of them. I don’t answer all the questions about him.”
Game plans
Pops questioned Martin’s motive in shooting his mouth off about the magazine pictures.
“We have different game plans. I question his, but I keep it to myself,” she said.
Posing in sexy clothes, said Pops, was a means of reinventing herself the way Madonna has done countless times to defy age.
“Sometimes, you have to make noise,” she said. “This is the loudest I’ve made this whole year. Most of the noise came from him. This is a way of getting more jobs. ”
She continued: “He should understand [that] I’m now a single working mother. This is my work. In our work, we have to be different all the time. I don’t find anything wrong with the pictures.
“As single mom, it’s very hard to make a living for what my kids and I need. I don’t ask him to take care of everything.
Is that wrong?
“Is that wrong... taking care of my kids, and for as long as they understand?”
Pops insisted that her sons—Robin, 19, and Ram, 16—by Martin did not find anything wrong with the sexy pictorial.
“I know... I live with them,” she pointed out. “I work hard. Nobody supports me. It’s not a crime to do what is best for my kids. They understand... there’s nothing to be ashamed of. They’re mature. Kids nowadays are different. Maybe, it’s Martin who hasn’t grown up. But it doesn’t matter, he’s my ex.”
Pops would have wanted her ex to be around to help her raise their family.
“He’s far away when he could be here and help out a little bit more. But he’s there and he’s even going to have another child.”
Why she cried
Martin and his current girlfriend Katrina Ojeda are expecting a son. Pops admitted that she cried when she heard.
“But... only because I thought the kids didn’t know,” she said. “He promised the kids that he wouldn’t have another child.”
Pops said she was glad Martin could talk candidly about Katrina now. “For the longest time,” she said, “people didn’t think she actually existed. I hope the blame doesn’t come back to me.”
* * *
On having Pops pose for the cover of FHM, the magazine’s editor in chief Allan Madrilejos said: “We’ve always wanted her. When she finally said yes, we made sure she’d be at her most comfortable and confident during the shoot. We respected her and her limits, treating her like the queen she has always been to us and her fans.”
Publisher Lisa Gokongwei was equally elated: “Pops looks fabulous. We are about the same age but she looks 10 years younger. I think that she showed an independence of spirit and self confidence, which I respect, by posing for FHM. She doesn’t have to prove anything. My God, she is Pops Fernandez. She is iconic.”

mmJun :
I like Lisa's comments. But I think there is more
that was going on than she understood. I don't think
it was Pops idea to post for FHM.
And I think she probably shouldn't have. Because like
Lisa said "She doesn't have anything to prove."
I also think she doesn't have to shock her fans into
taking more notice of what she is up to. Pops just needs
to be awesome again with her concerts and shows. She got
2 movie roles coming up. But she is due more movies and
better roles. Her detractor(s) owes her more work and
shouldn't be taking credit for something he owes to her
in the first place.
This should be an active period for Pops coming up.
