Curtain-raisers:

• Best wishes to the handsome (hunkish) Fil-Am singer who is getting married to his lovely non-showbiz girlfriend and giving up his career in the Philippines to settle down in Las Vegas.

As Funfare reported a few issues ago, ex-couple Pops Fernandez and Martin Nievera were a hit during their concert last Sept. 23 at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Connecticut, produced by Group Ole’s Drs. Ramon and Ching Legarda (cousin of celebrity lawyer Katrina Legarda, legal counsel of Liz Almoro in her celebrated annulment case against husband Willie Revillame) in cooperation with Mohegan Sun’s Juliet Dayrit-Dizon and Teryl Ann Santos.

It was Pops and Martin’s first concert together after their nasty media word war over Pops’ daring pictorial in FHM magazine. Did sparks, uh, fly? Luckily, they did not. Neither was there any exchange of even veiled insults (the ex-couple are too professional to do that).

In fact, reported Funfare reader Grethel Bolandrina (who was in the 4,000-strong audience), there was "magic" and "unmistakable chemistry" between Pops and Martin who, throughout the concert, acted as if they never broke up at all. They didn’t give any hint at all if off stage there existed any "animosity" between them.

In her report, Bolandrina said that Pops and Martin have become "more passionate entertainers," with Pops teasing Martin after their opening number, "Nagsisisi ka na? (Are you sorry now?)," much to the amusement of the audience. To which Martin reacted with that "doublemint look" on his face, translating "sisi" (sorry) to "see, see!"

"It was bringing back what they used to do," added Bolandrina.

The repertoire included songs-to-fall-in-love-with like Sometimes When We Touch, Be My Lady, Almost Paradise, Tonight We Celebrate, Honesty, Forever, Nandito Ako and Bakit Ngayon Ka Lang.

Were the ex-couple comfortable with each other (even only onstage) because Pops’ boyfriend Jomari Yllana (or have they since broken up?) and Martin’s expectant girlfriend Katrina Ojeda (due to give birth to a boy named Santino very soon) were not around?

Even only for those two hours Pops and Martin were together weaving magic onstage, said Bolandrina, those in the audience entertained the illusion (wishful thinking?) that they would get back together again.

Yes, if only, if only, if only...!!!
