Pops Fernandez: 25 years in music and still counting
By TERRIE B. FUCANAN
The Manila Times

The year 2006 sets several milestones for Pops Fernandez. It is the year that she turns 40; marks her 25 fruitful years in show business; and also the same period, she says, "that I am starting all over again."

She explains: "It’s not just through a new album but also with movies and a lot of new avenues for self-expression and artistic growth."

Yes, the recording artist, live concert performer, actress, host, commercial endorser, fashion entrepreneur and mom to two fast-growing boys—Robin and Ram—is still on the lookout for more pursuits that can further cramp her already hectic schedule.

"I enjoy working," says Pops, who is looking svelte and even more radiant these days. "And of course, I have to work hard for the tuition of my boys," she jokingly admits at the launch of her latest album, Silver, on October 23.

Pops may be on a quest to add yet another feather on her cap, on top of churning out platinum albums and sold-out shows, but she says her music career is her priority. And that is why, even with a series of shows, concert tours, her hosting stints and a reported rocky relationship with the actor Jomari Yllana, Pops has managed to produce a 10-track album with Universal Records.

Silver comes as a long-awaited follow-up to Pops’ last album with Warner Music, When Words Are Not Enough, released in 2004. "My other albums carried romantic titles," she says. "This one, although filled with sentimental songs, emphasizes the 25th year aspect of my career."

Comprising of slow nostalgic remakes and originals, Silver speaks much about Pops’ romantic personality. "Filipinos like to hear painful songs," she says. "I like songs that make me cry."

The album features compositions by Vehnee Saturno ("Kung Malalaman Mo" and "You Said Goodbye"), Moy Ortiz/Edith Gallardo ("Anong Sabi ng Puso Mo"), Babsie Molina/Edith Gallardo ("Mahal Kita Dahil Mahal Kita"), Cecille Azarcon ("Huwag Kang Mangako," which is Pops’ favorite because "It’s something I have experienced"), Jim Brickman ("By Heart"), Martin Nievera ("Still In Love With You") and her son Robin Nievera with which she did a duet (the alternative and rock-sounding "Friends").

Except for "Friends," all the songs are typically Pops: bittersweet and poignant yet timeless and radio-friendly.

"Friends" is the first project of Pops and Robin, who not only does a duet with his mom but also plays the acoustic guitar and shows off his John Mayer-like voice. "It’s a dream come true!" Pops exclaims. "I’ve always wanted a song for him and have always looked forward to getting his first shot at singing it professionally. He’s a talented musician and a great artist, and that’s coming from a very proud mom."

Although she had arrived at a point of semi-retirement sometime in the past, Pops has chosen a different course and is bent on moving forward with her show-biz career. She’s doing it with the support of her new managers at the ALV Talent Circuit, headed by Arnold Vegafria.

Pops says she never felt ready to take on more career challenges than today. She attributes not only her positive outlook to her age but also to her experiences that "made her a stronger, more patient and more understanding person."

And as if to prove how driven she is to remain prominent on the concert scene, Pops described her show-packed year-end calendar. After her Halloween stint at Casino Filipino Tagaytay on October 28, she will celebrate her 40th birthday with a show at the Crowne Plaza Galleria on December 11. On New Year’s Eve, she will perform live at the Makati Shangri-La Hotel.

"I used to take life too seriously," Pops says. "But now, I’m enjoying it
