Pops’ New Year’s Eve countdown concert at Shangri-La Makati
Crispina Martinez Belen/ Manila Bulletin
Performance-wise, 2006 has been another banner year for Concert Queen Pops Fernandez. The year for her is capped by her credible performance of a villain in Regal Entertainment’s 2006 Metro Manila Film Festival-Philippines entry, "Zsa Zsa Zaturnnah."
And now, Pops ushers in 2007 with a countdown concert aptly titled "Champagne Pops" at the Makati Shangri-La Hotel lobby on New Year’s Eve (Dec. 31) from 10:45 to 12 midnight. Her special guest is Prince of R&B Jay-R.
The New Year shindig marks a first in the pop icon’s illustrious showbiz career – which incidentally celebrates its silver anniversary next year. "Can you believe it?!," she exclaims, "I’ve never done a New Year’s Eve countdown before, since I’m usually on vacation or out of town with my family and kids. That’s why I’m so excited about making a big bang at the Makati Shangri–La this time! I’d like to see how they’ll spruce up the lobby and the beautiful garden outside just for the show."
As the horizon sparkles with bright, glittery hues and the cool December air reverberates with the deafening roar of fireworks, expect Pops to match the festive holiday mood with her own spirited renditions of fast–paced, upbeat numbers guaranteed to get the crowd on its feet. "I’ll be doing a lot of fast, celebration–type songs from the 70s and 80s," Pops shares. "Never a slow or dull moment, that’s for sure."
And with the Prince of R&B around, it’s bound to a dynamite tandem that’s just as explosive. "Jay–R is definitely one of the most electrifying, soulful performers in the circuit today," she admits. "He’s got a totally unique style. I did a couple of shows with him in the States recently, and we work pretty well together."
Out with the old and in with the new. By the time she offers her celebratory toast for the New Year, Pops will have rummaged through her wonderful memories of the past year. "There have been a lot of changes career–wise," she intones, "and I’m glad for all of them. I kicked off my year with a fresh new slate when I joined Arnold Vegafria’s talent management outfit, ALV Talent Circuit. I’ve had lots of shows out of the country – in the US, Europe. I’ve traveled a lot and the movie (‘Zsa Zsa Zaturnah’) was a welcome surprise."
And as the Makati Shangri-La lobby fills with the delightfully bubbly and effervescent zing of champagne, Pops will have just as well mapped out her fresh new mandate for the coming year. "There’s a lot of new opportunities to look forward to," she discloses. "Concert tours, movies...I’ve been getting a lot of offers from several movie outfits, with equally-exciting stories as well."
Perhaps Pops’ many fans are just as eager to know what sort of New Year’s Eve rituals or customs she’s practiced and adopted over the years. After all, Filipinos have imbibed their own set of traditions purportedly for better luck and prosperity.
Ironically, you won’t find Pops flaunting polka dots on New Year’s Eve, nor can you catch her jangling coins in her pocket, or even stuffing her dinner table with all things around and lucky.
"We make our own luck," Pops reaffirms. "However, for New Year’s Eve, I usually wear bright colors – usually red – because I feel that we should always make a bright start for the year. Also, I’m a firm believer that whatever mood you’re in at the start of the year will very well be your mindset for the entire year, so I just make sure that I think happy thoughts."
At the stroke of midnight on New Year’s Eve, the unmistakable sound of champagne Pops will rise above the din – ushering forth another year of blessings and new possibilities.
Pass the champagne, and let’s all raise our glasses and cheer as we toast to the Concert Queen’s homage to the New Year!
