Pops enjoys smooth-sailing romance with Jomari
By LEAH C. SALTERIO/ Under Manila Bulletin Entertainment section

Her failed marriage and her painful romances have not hindered Pops
Fernandez from falling in love again.

Note to Pops & music fans: An old Inside Music Buzz report stated
that Pops got "set-up" with actor Jomari into a media created ( and
Backroom Inc. sponsored ) showbiz romance. That is how it started.
If they have move up into something more is always possible but
still important what it was originally. Because its the same thing
that happened with others like singer Erik Santos with Rufa Mae
Guinto and Regine Velasquez with Ogie Alcasid.
A known artist detractor was tagged as behind it all. Motives and
purposes outside of the obvious not posted.

Of course, everyone knows by now that Pops has found a new love. Her
relationship with actor Jomari Ylanna has been going on for more
than two years. Thankfully, they have managed to keep it smooth-
sailing despite their respective, historic pasts, as well as the
seemingly endless intrigues in the business they are both into.

Learning from her previous relationships, including her failed
marriage with Martin Nievera, Pops knows that the less she talks
about her romance with Jomari, the less intrigues she faces.
Initially, she never openly admitted about her romance with Jomari
even if they are often seen together, leaving the public to
endlessly speculate. Apparently, Pops has learned to draw the line
where the public's knowledge about her personal affairs should end.

She's been through painful separations and nothing can compensate
for the breakup of her marriage. But Pops has moved on. Today, she
is happy and that's what matters most.

Even if she's busy with performances abroad – US, Europe and the
Middle East – she makes it a point to spend time with Jomari. When
she returned late last June from a successful concert series in the
US with Kuh Ledesma, Pops was seen with Jomari in the Christina
Aguilera concert at The Fort. They also graced the launch of the
Bench reality TV program at ABS-CBN.

"He totally understands what it is that I have to do and I
appreciate that," says Pops of her boyfriend. "When you want to make
time, you can find time even if you're busy. So sometimes, straight
from work, we'll probably have a late dinner just to be able to
spend time. Days, you can make it longer if you really want to be
together. So even if it's off-hours or something, there are places
that you can go to that are open 24 hours, where we just dine
together and it actually makes it more fun because after a long
day's work or after responsibilities that you have to do, I look
forward to the time when I get to relax a little bit and spend time
with someone who's very special to me. So I think it also adds to
the excitement."

Pops admires Jomari for being patient, the best trait she likes
about him. She cannot be more pleased that Jomari gets along well
with her two grown-up sons – Robin, who's turning 21 this November;
and Ram, 17.

"We love to eat and watch movies with my kids," Pops allows. "I
think they're getting along well, but it's still the getting-
toknoweach-other process. I'll be not so honest if I say, `Alright,
they're supertight and everything.' I know it takes time. Everything
takes time, although the boys are very comfortable with him
(Jomari)."

Even when it's just her and Jomari together, Pops attests they
are "very comfortable" with each other, although they are still
getting to know each other, too. "I think it's always a learning
process and you learn something new from each other everyday. The
same goes for my two sons and Jom. I think that's just right because
they want to make sure also that I'm gonna be with someone who also
knows how to take care of me."

When she's not busy, Pops prefers to stay home and finds time with
her two boys. "I wait for my kids to come home and we do have our
time together," she shares. "I make it a point to have fun. Our
family likes to stay home. We like being in one room and watch TV
and munch on something. Now, more than ever, I easily get
sentimental that the kids are both grown-ups. They have their own
set of friends with their own lakad.

"Now you can't just say, `Hey, I want you to stay home.' Now it's
like, `Hey Mom, I'm going out.' I get more sentimental when I think
that in a few more years, they're really going to have their own
lives. Wala pa naman girlfriends. They're very open with me, but
they also know I'm a very jealous mom."

Last week of July, Pops left again for another series of concerts in
the US, with a plan to hook up with Jomari who would attend a
wedding of his relative there. She will return in October to prepare
for her 25th anniversary concert at the Araneta Coliseum in
December, which is also her birth month. She's turning 41.

Pops is celebrating her 25th year in the business with a birthday-
concert in December, to be directed by Rowell Santiago. Trying to
fit in all her career highlights of 25 years in a two-hour show will
certainly be a tough job for the entire production team, but Pops
cannot contain her excitement this early.

Last July, before she left for her ongoing concert tour in the US,
she already did her pictorial for the concert with famed lensman Jun
de Leon.

"We were actually discussing to try not to make it like a retro kind
of a concert," Pops offers. "But of course, we'll make it a show of
today. Basta, it'll be great. I've met several times with the
production team. We're trying to finalize most of the songs. We
started early because I'm leaving nga. We haven't finalized the
guest lineup, but for sure there will be a lot of special people who
have been part of my life in the last 25 years.

Does that include Martin? After all, their magic onstage still works
wonders for their millions of loyal fans.

"I can't answer that right now," smiles Pops. "I'm not sure yet. As
of today, Martin's inclusion in the concert is not clear with me."

If things work out well again with them between now and her birthday
concert, Pops is not closing the door to having her ex-husband
participate in her forthcoming show. "Hopefully, not just for the
show itself, but it's always nice when everything is smooth-
sailing," Pops allows. "Sometimes, there are certain things which
happen and I guess it all depends on how we handle the situation."

Looking back at the past 25 years, Pops amazingly wonders how time
flies so fast. "Wow, I really didn't think, I'll be here (in
showbiz) for long," Pops beams. "It's like that my 25 years came so
fast. When I was starting, 10 years in my mind was already long. So
I used to tell whoever would interview me, `Yeah, 10 years and you
know, I'll find something else to do.' Then 25 years na pala and I
still enjoy what I do. I have not realized how passionate I am with
my work until just a few years ago."
