Divalicious and emotional, Pops cries many times in concert

Concert review
Kaye Villagomez

Big guest stars, a few wardrobe malfunctions, a crafted repertoire and a real reason to celebrate (making the performer cry at least eight times) sum up "Divalicious," Pops Fernandez’s silver anniversary show.

The fashion injections may be anti–climactic of a 25th anniversary concert (the show also celebrated the Concert Queen as a fashion icon) but Pops pulled off quite a party Saturday night at the Araneta Coliseum. "Divalicious" is not only a concert of what Pops has become in the last 25 years in show business but it is as much a reflection of the things, events and people that made her who she is today.

It is not a relief for Pops that this concert happened the same year when the Pinoy concert crowd experienced Christina Aguilera, Akon, Vertical Horizon and Beyoncé Knowles. However, Pops has the upperhand in the sense that she has a captive audience who did not only go to her concert to be entertained—they also happened to have grown up with her through the years.

As in most shows we saw this year, we were particular of the opening number. These days, the first production in a major concert sets the stake and should keep the dice rolling. Pops opted for a colorful, colorful blast–from–the–80s–past of production that really got the crowd hooked for two visual reasons—Pops’ energy was all over and she really gets away with hot–and–over–40 on stage.

Emerging at 9:15 p.m. from a platform that rose from inside the stage, Pops entered her show in an eye–catching tanga and sleeves that remind you of Madonna’s in her "Frozen" video. She then opened with "Glamorous Life," "Street Beat," "Together Again," "Believe," "Jump" and "Telephone." Behind Pops, three huge monitors continuously convey what the live stage could not accommodate simultaneously—more snapshots and videos of Pops. In this particular number, it’s the many faces and fashion phases of the diva in a "You Did It Again" (Kylie Minogue) like music vid.

After the extensive opening medley, Pops welcomed her audience and started to withdraw the first set of tears. "It’s hard not to get emotional," she said. "[But] 25 years and you’re all still here! Please feel free to sing, scream, and dance with me. It’s your party, too."

Then (as if it hasn’t started), Pops announced "Don’t blink… It’s show time!" A sexy video of her and current beau Jomari Yllana (who is front and center among the audience) is played while Pops changed outfits. Then Pops reappeared with a skin-toned short shorts and tube top for her "Beautiful Liar" number where Pops affirmed the Divalicious title with choreography and props that created the illusion that she’s naked.

Next is pop/R&B time with Jay-R and Kris Lawrence, song is the infectious "Beautiful Girls." Then Jay and Kris continue the R&B grooving with "So Sick" and "Sexy Like."

Pops then surfaced anew in a poon-like outfit. And when we say "poon," it’s really the Santacruzan and procession effect we’re talking about. An outfit like this wouldn’t last a minute (thank heavens!) because Pops took off her satiny red robe and revealed a bedazzled gold curve–hugging suit. It’s time for Pops to sashay with her own back–to–the–past hits (cue to "Little Star," "Kaya Pala," "Just Say You Love Me," "Don’t Say Goodbye" and "Dito") followed by an emotional medley of duets she used to sing during "Penhouse Live" days with Martin Nievera ("Almost Paradise," "Tonight I Celebrate My Love For You," "With You I’m Born Again," and "Maybe"). She cried again during this part thanking her ex-husband (who really did not attend Pops’ concert) "for all those wonderful times, I would deeply and sincerely wanna thank him for the two blessings we both share together."

More thank you’s had Pops crying on especially when she thanked her Kapamilya network. "nagtrabaho lang naman ako. Ibalik sana nila ako," she said to her ABS-CBN family.

First time with Sharon & Gary

Pops moved on with more fashion show cum concert. More models and showbiz personality catwalking while Pops did more fast numbers like "Umbrella" and "Buttons" the celeb models are Cheska and Patrick Garcia, Iya Villania, Luis Alandy and Bianca King. John Prats also did a number.

For an artist like Pops who began thriving in that musically glorious decade of the 80s, it is a requisite to pay homage to one of that decade’s icons. In "Divalicious’" case, it could only be Madonna. Pops segued with "Holiday," "Express Yourself," "Lucky Star" and even the new hit "Hung Up."

The main event in Pops’ concert however are the guests and Pops made a small wish list of people she wanted to be with in this concert—the final lineup included Kuh Ledesma, Gary Valenciano and Sharon Cuneta.

Pops next went for a Motown medley ("Stop In The Name Of Love," "Ain’t No Mountain," "Baby Love," and "I’m Gonna Make You Love Me") with Kuh where her feathery fuchsia wardrobe did not cooperate very well. The deep neckline was surely absent during rehearsals that Pops had to hold together the gap between the lines of the deep V–cut or else her breasts will be part of the highlights of the concert.

Disaster averted, Pops moved on with a Flamenco-inspired number with Gary V. Although Pops’s dance steps here revealed her body stocking laced inner outfit when she lifted her skirt (thus, wardrobe slip number 2), this is one of the best numbers of the night. Gary V really affects that stage with entertaining energy no matter whose concert it is he’s guesting in. Pops and Gary also looked good together and they also happen to dance well together in that Latino mix of "You’re My Everything."

Pops asked Gary how come we never did this together in any of our past shows. Gary replied in jest, "Because you’re the Concert Queen and a Concert Queen is expected to be with the Concert King. Pure Energy lang naman ako."

Then it was another first when Sharon Cuneta performed with Pops via Bacharach medley ("Say A Little Prayer," "I’ll Never Fall In Love," "Make It Easy On Yourself," "You’ll Never Get To Heaven If You Break My Heart," and "That’s What Friends Are For"). Sharon and Pops have that woman-to-woman chemistry on stage.

When Pops’s sons Robin and Ram went up on stage, we knew tears were coming. But this time, the crowd joined Pops as some shed a few tears here and there because Pops’ boys really performed well reflecting the bond between her and her sons during "The Gift" number. Pops said feelingly of her boys, "You are my heroes and the most beautiful gifts in my life. I am complete because of you and you both saved me from a lot of troubles." This was again, one of the better parts of the show.

By this time, we lost count of the number of changes she had. Pops’s last two numbers ("A Song For You" and "What I Did For Love") were more emotional ones she started losing makeup as she couldn’t help but let all the bittersweet flashes of life misses and the wonderful blessings of life hits cross her mind each time she thought of people to thank and the 25 years she did not believe she would reach.

"When I entered showbiz, I thought pa-cute lang ang showbiz. I didn’t realize that pag sinalihan mo pala ito, it’s a serious career. You’ve all been through all pain with me and I am where I am because of all of you. Dahil sa inyo, natutulungan ko pa rin ang pamilya ko. Dahil sa inyo nasusuportahan ko pa rin ang mga anak ko."

Pops bared her heart once more as woman who fell in love and had to break free from the same experience. "I did say always and forever but I broke my promise. Not my fault, though. Sometimes we think that the biggest downfalls are caused by love but what we tend to overlook is when love becomes the same reason the why pain is taken away."

Pops cried again when she thanked her mother and an earlier part when she dedicated a song for her late father Eddie Fernandez.

On the whole, Pops remained one of those who do not only deliver a concert but a production charged with originality and good dancing, too. Never mind if from where we sat the speakers tend to drown Pops's voice particularly in faster numbers.

Like what we said earlier, the concert is a celebration of Pops’s silver showbiz feat. Throughout the 25 years, Pops was in all fairness able to chameleonize her style and performance she has perfected a Pops formula for an entertaining show.

Concert Queen, indeed.
