Hiya

My names's Helen, Im 19 and come from Manchester, England.
Ive not been a fan of john hurt long. Ive seen him in ROB ROY (Im also a big fan of Liam Neeson- i find him very sexy and as good as actor as john!!) but I didnt really get into him until I saw 1984. I was mainly watching it because my sci fi class was about dystopias and the cold war and 1984 was mentioned so I decided to take it out of my uni library. Ive been renewing it as much as I can since!!! Ive been trying to win it on ebay but I keep losing out on the bids!!!!

I find john eerily sexy in 1984 and hes got anice voice in it too as well as in WATERSHIP DOWN.

Can anyone recommend any good John Hurt films?? Dont say Harry Potter because Im going to buy them anyway!!

Helen

There's a good movie called "love and death on long island". maybe I have the title a little bit wrong, but it's close. Anyway, John is absolutely wonderful, hysterical and sad in that film. you can also check out "scandal" which has something to do with a major sex scandal that rocked the british parliment, that is a wonderful film. John was also fabulous in "midnight express" but that film is extremely dark and depressing, so I wouldn't watch it on a sunny day.
Anyway, there are a zillion other movie's of his out there that are good, do some research and find them. Also, there's
"the elephant man", that is a wonderful and brilliant film by David Lynch. John made a few stinkers as well, such as "king ralph" and the infamous "heaven's gate." Stay away from those! that's all i can think of for now.
A big "Howdy" (as we say in the South) from USA, Katie

Hey, welcome to the club, I'm pretty young my self and havnt been a Hurt fan very long either. The movie I first dicovered John in was "King Ralph" and since then I'v only seen him in Harry Potter and his scene lasted like 5 minutes, if that. Anyway, King ralph is about a ordinary man from Las Vegas finds out that he is the only surviving heir to the British Throne. He spends the whole of the time trying to learn how to be a King, from his many advisors. Palace fever runs amock as Ralph tries to figure out how to live up to his family's reputation. Hurt plays a man named Lord Percival Graves, who tries to get parlament to throw Ralph off the trown so that he can be the new king. This is a comedy and while Hiurt plays a bad guy he does a great job trying to work with the King along side, Peter o'Toole (Lawrence of Arabia) and Richard Griffiths, (Vernon Dursley!!!)
Try this and see how you like it.

I have been a fan of John Hurt since 1976 when I first saw him the Mobil Masterpiece Theatre production of I,Claudius. He played the part of Caligula (as an adult) and was absolutely phenomenal in the role. If you can, check with your library. He was funny, evil, psychotic, bad, bad, bad. You loved to hate him. Also, he was superb in the true story of the jockey who becomes ill with cancer in Champions. Yes, he has a voice that just draws you in. Has anyone ever, or I should say, will they ever forget the devastating role he portrayed in Elephant Man? He makes your heart just break. He is more than talented. He is a superb actor with a haunting, drawing voice. Long may he live.

Hi Helen,

He was nominated for an Oscar for "Midnight Express" in the 70's, also plays a wonderful character in the early 90's film called "Scandal", and is excellent as "The Elephant Man", even though he's quite covered up in makeup.

[> Hurt Voice Movies -- Gertie, 08:59:19 09/02/03 Tue

I may get a little "preechy" here, so excuse me and don't take it personally.

John Hurt's voice is and always will be the voice of Aragorn. My mother read the Lord of The Rings to me when i was 5, and the whole story framed my playtime. (I'm 27.) Hurt's voice resonated with the weather torn, 39 year old Aragorn that is portrayed in the 70's cartoon Lord of The Rings. If you have only recently become involved with TLOTR, then i suggest you broaden your ideas about it and watch that movie. Hurt simply IS the voice of Aragorn, and I'm sure that Tolkien would have agreed with Aragorn having at least a voice that sounds well traveled.

Hurt is also the voice of the Horned KIng in the Black Cauldron. Exceedingly creepy, his voice alone could give you nightmares!

He is the voice of Hazel in Watership Down. The movie is decent enough, but if you plow through and read the book, you will be able to hear Hurt's voice popping out as Haxel, before you even see the movie. So perfect.

I am a cartoon movie fan, but in all fairness, I do like movies with real people in them as well. ;-)

Check these out if you haven't already.

P.S. I am chomping at the bit for Prisoner of Azkaban comes out!!!! I guess Hurt won't be in another movie until Goblet comes out!

I highly recomend "Mr. Forbush and the Penguins" or, as it was released in the USA, "Cry of The Penguins", 1971.
It's recently been rereleased! I would rent or buy this ASAP. It's John, John, and more John. Nearly nothing else but penguins and skeets! A very personal journey with John, oh, yes. He lets you into his head.
Enjoy. It's well worth it for a Hurt fan. ;)

How about every film he's ever been in? ;)
I always remember when I was a kid being forced (and enjoying) to watch Champion by my dad who was/is a horse racing fanatic, next thing I remember was Alien (which I've just watched) but I've seen many of his films. Then today I just found out he's in Hellboy and I'm really chuffed that the guy's still going.
There aren't many real actors going around these days who command the same screen presence as John does, he definitely ranks alongside the greatest like Alec Guinness and Richard Attenbourgh.

I don't know much about him, whether he's a typical Hollywoodised "I'm an actor get out of my way!!" type guy or not but he's definitely an actor and a damned good one.
Deserves far more awards than he's ever got, not that I know how many he's ever won but he's not won enough. ;)

I haven't seen Hellboy yet, it's my kind of film but even if it wasn't I'd still watch it just to see how the guy was getting on. I gather he's around 65 years old now, I'm just hoping he keeps going and going cos when I do get to see Hellboy it'll be like seeing an old mate who became an actor donkeys years ago.

At 65 I just hope to God he monitors this website and knows just how much all his hard work is appreciated and that he's achieved some kind of immortality!!!

Some of his best films?
1984
10 Rillington Place
Alien
The Ghoul (At 19 you should see at least one real horror film from the Hammer studios ;)
Watership Down

And two of the most moving films I've ever seen in my life.
Elephant Man - Totally unbelievable, it should be the law that everyone has to watch that film!!
And finally and obviously - Champions

Keep on going John Hurt!!!!!
