Like Bob wrote, rectal tubes ARE in use as he and I have written. "Idiot Check" and "You Are Right" probably aren't old enough to have any such experiences to share & I certainly hope that you get the opportunity going down the 'road of life'! I didn't want the indignity of a rectal tube, but abdominal pains will make a person do almost anything to get some relief!

I had a tube inserted afterwards too, but the nurse called it a flatus bag. It was like a small enema bag with a short rectal tube attached to catch anything that came out.

I get yearly colonoscopies from a great doctor. She takes her time and does the exams without the mind-numbing conscious sedation that most use and the exams are painless. I have had 3 of them and have never had to fart afterwards; when I asked her about this she said that a good doctor will usually be able to suck the air out thru the scope when the are done with the exam, eliminating the need for the patient to expel it. I asked about a rectal tube and she looked confused; she said that some use them, but thaat the scope is a 5 1/2 foot hollow rectal tube with suction and it's easy to suck out the air. Most doc's don't bother with this, they just let me patient suffer and try to pass the air themselves.

That sounds good to know. Will keep in mind for the next one if I live that long!
