Many was the time that kind and caring nurses administered enemas to me. However, they were mercilessly efficient and my pleas to stop the enema so I could go to the washroom were always ignored or brushed aside. I would squirm and moan and plead: nothing would deter them from administering every drop that they felt was necessary.

Does anyone recall having pleaded for the enema to stop? To whom ? Was the giver a relative or nurse ?
I remember hearing a girl in the next ward getting an enema from one of the nurses and she must have asked at least 5 times to be allowed to go to the bathroom. ( Her posterior looked well rounded in her hospital gown when she would walk around. I was excited to hear her getting an enema. )

I understand. Mom gave me many enemas while I was growing up. I'm not sure how old I was when she gave me my first one. Most of the ones I remember were given from the trusty old family enema bag. It was no fun until I was over age 10. I remember one time I was getting very full, and as usual was pleading with her to stop the enema (always hot, soapy and given with a fast flow). She just said "you have only taken about one cup" and keep the old enema going. I continued to plead. Finally she checked the bag. It was nealy empty. She finally stopped the enema and let me sit on the toilet. I nearly filled that toilet. It was a most though enema ... but one I really hated.

My aunt gave my enemas along with my mom. It didn't make any good to cry for them to stop the enema, they never did and it only ended when the bag was empty and at least two full minutes passed. Also, when she took me to the clinic the nurse always gave an enema or two because my aunt always told the nurse how she gave the enemas to me, and I hate it when the nurse gave me an enema, it was embarrasing, especially if I was order in the knee-chest position and spread, God that evil woman saw me totally open.

I've always found hospital enemas to be very unpleasant. By default, even today for some reason, nurses typically administer enemas too fast, too hot and soapy, and the nozzle inserted too far for it to be a comfortable experience. But with every nurse that's ever given me an enema, when I say "stop" or "I can't hold any more", she'll clamp it off till the cramping subsides, or help me to the commode before removing the nozzle. The last hospital enema I had was given by a girl that couldn't have been more than 20-25 years old, but she was super gentle, and gave the enema as good as a nurse with years more of experience. Most nurses try hard to make what's normally very unpleasant at least tolerable as possible.

The last time I was in hospital, I was admitted on Monday. By Saturday, things were getting pretty full back there and I asked for an enema. About noon, an asian nurse came in and casually dropped a Fleet on the bed beside me. She then took my vitals, changed the IVs and brought out the bedside commode from the bathroom. She then came around to the right side of the bed and told me to lie on my left side. Within seconds I felt the nozzle slip in and the chilly solution being squeezed into me. She withdrew the nozzle and left the room. I lay there for almost an hour then had to get onto the commode where I pooped a few rocks and some brown solution. Although the enema was only slightly effective, the nurse seem satisfied.

Five or six days later I felt constipated again. This time I asked the doctor for a large volume enema and that it be given in the evening, after visiting hours. That night the nurse came in, along with a nursing aide. She covered the bed with several pads and then filled a clear, disposable bag very full of tap water and hung it on the IV pole. She told me to turn onto my left side and I felt her slip the tubing nozzle deep inside and start the flow. I said it felt chilly, but she replied that cool water works better. After a few seconds, she noticed that there was only a small fracture bedpan in the room, so she sent the aide to the storeroom for "a big bedpan".

When the aide returned with the bedpan, the nurse restarted the flow and fully drained the bag into me. She then withdrew the nozzle and placed the bedpan behind me on the bed so I could easily roll onto it. As she left, she told me to hold the enema as long as possible, saying 15 minutes would be awesome.

That enema really worked!

About another week later and I was constipated again. My meds included Colace daily, but it just doesn't work on me. I simply cannot poo on a bedpan without help. This enema was pretty much like the one previous, except I saw the nurse add a soap packett to the 1000 ml of water in the bag and mix it up. The aide got the commode and put it at my bedside. The nurse gave me the enema and then the two of them helped me onto the commode right away and left. The enema was quite effective and I soon went to sleep. About 3 am, I awoke with a very strong urge. Luckily, a fracture bedpan was on the bedside table and I was able to get it under my butt very quickly. In seconds, I had a very large, soft BM. I guess some of the soapy enema solution had remained inside.

Except for the Fleet, the enemas were not very uncomfortable and they sure did work!

As a nurse for 30 years, I've gave hundreds of enemas. Enemas were routinely ordered prior to surgery, before delivery, before GI tests and if a patient did not have a BM for 24 hours. It always seemed something patients wanted to avoid. Nurses follow written orders. It was fairly common to have patients ask for the enema to be stopped, voice they couldn't take anymore, complain of cramping and find the entire process embarrassing. Prepping for the barium enema required the patient to take a laxative and have enemas until clear before the barium enema and enemas afterwards to remove any residual barium. Unpleasant for sure.

My mom was a nurse before she got married and had us kids.
Her Mom (my grandmas - she lived with us) was also, a retired nurse. Naturally they were great believers of using enemas.

When I was small, I had to lay naked over mom's lap (I had to take a bath after). A small bulb was used.
I was a kicker go grandma held my ankles while mom squeezed the bulb.

When I got bigger, mom used a standard enema bag. I do vividly remember lay naked on my side with my knees up on mom's bed. Grandma would hols the bag up while mom put in the tube ( I remember how cold her hands were when she pulled my cheek apart.) Mom whould hold one had on my legs and the other on my side so I would move.

Whe I was older (after 10) I was calm so mom would just stand there
watching until the bag was empty. I still remember watching my grandma. I was embarrassed when I got older especially when I got a "boner". They didn't "bat an eye" - didn't bother them at all.

I started to like giving myself enemas when I was 12 --
laying naked on the bathroom floor with the bag hanging from the towel rack. and masturbating while the bag emptied.

Several times while mom was away for a short vacation, I got grandmas to give me an enema. She let me lay naked on my stomach on mom's Bed ( I told her I would be more comfortable. She was really goo9d at putting the tube in without seperating my buttocks. I asked her not to tell mom and she didn't. I now believe she kinda knew I liked her doing it.

Wish I was young again

I have been hospitalized a few times for various surgeries. Those times in the 60's were especially memorable. Nurses of those days were very enema efficient. An enema was practically guaranteed either as a prep at the beginning of a stay, or as a necessity prior to release.

As time went on, enemas were less common. It was still possible to get one in the 70's and 80's, but disposables were all too common. These days, it's almost impossible to get a Fleet's. Is it any wonder that nurses of today are less efficient at giving enemas?
