No, I was never given a laxative - only an enema.

The two laxatives we generally had around our house when I was growing up were castor oil and Epsom Salts. It wasn't common for either of these laxatives to be administered before an ordinary enema, it certainly wasn't unheard of either. Castor oil was much slower working and was mostly given to everyone in the early sfternoon for spring and fall flushings, followed by enemas after dinner. I did get a number of epsom salts laxatives when I got home from school if my mom decided I was constipated, but it seemed my father got more than anyone else. When he'd come home from work and complain that he was backed up, Mom would mix up a full glass of epsom salts for him. He seemed so willing to drink it all while I always struggled even with just half a glass. Our enemas then ame after dinner when Mom had finished the dishes but she wanted to administer them before the laxative fully functioned. I always loved it how my dad followed her to the bathroom like us chldren did when she said it was time for his enema.

Epsom Salt is SOOOOOO much easier to take if you put it in an enema!
I've been doing it for 35 years!

Glen, is Epson salt the same as baking soda?

No, it isnt. Otherwise you would get the runs after eating anything for which baking soda was used in baking process. I dont know whar exactly is baking soda (I suppose a sodium carbonate), but Epsom salt in Germany "Glaubersalz" was produced by Dr.Glauber first of slat and sulphuric acid (the other product of this is hydrocloric acid called "Salzsäure" - meaning salt acid - in German).

NO!!!!!!
Epsom Salt is Magnesium Sulfate.
It IS readily available in the US, because it has uses in relieving the swelling in sprains and strains. It is also used in gardening in some parts of the country.

The directions include use as an oral laxative but not as an enema. I never could stand to drink the stuff, but it does make a good enema!

Any drug store has it!

Just be careful, the difference between a strong purge, and an overdose is rather narrow!

My mom would usually give me Fletcher's Castoria as a laxative when I was a child and would administer an enema the next day only if the Fletcher's didn't work at all or if it didn't work to her satisfaction. Once I got older, I'd request the enema over the laxative because I hated Fletchers and the enema worked alot faster and was less "crampy".

Bill,

Too many of our 'nut case' posters want to avoid admitting that many others of us actually DID request enemas from our Moms when we realised that we were 'stopped up' more than we liked.

I know I rarely had to ask for an enema, because my Mom could 'tell' when I was out of sorts from any of several causes. Today, I know that what the real effect of a soapy was: A treatment which re-normalised my acidity and which 'helped me' to help myself with my attitude and/or behavior.

Can I truly say I enjoyed every enema ever given to me? Probably not. But, the majority of enemas that I received were beneficial to me in lots of ways, whether I wanted to admit it or not, back then.

In our house, laxatives were never used. The enema bag was for the relief of any digestive problem. My mom always said that she wouldn't spend money on laxatives as long as the enema bag was available. It was always hanging on the shower arm ready and able to be put into action at a moments notice.

Like sse4fun's, my mom nver kept an oral laxative in the house. Why disrupt the entire digestive tract when she could go quickly to the "bottom" of the problem with a very reliable enema canful of warm soapsuds that worked within a few minutes.

Several years ago when I was working in the pharmacy of a discount store, a lady, probably mid 40s, came in as usual, and was shopping around. I noticed that she had picked out a package of a major brand laxative, and then strolled over to the enema bags. That was when we had a big selection. She carefully examine one of the fountain syringes, and looked back at the laxatives and to the box that the enema bag came in. I watched from a distance and wondered which she was going to choose. Finally, she brought both over to my counter and purchased both products. I wondered, she must have been really constipated, or just wanted to make sure. Of course, I never found out.

"Bill Jr" must be my brother. We had the same experience.
Mom would offer me the choice of Fletcher's Castoria or an enema. It didn't take too many times for me to figure out the enema was the least discomfort and a whole lot faster. After a few times mom wouldn't even offer the Castoria because she knew I would not take it.

In my late teens I developed severe constipation due to drugs taken for my asthma condition. My mother would give me a dose of Castor Oil around two in the afternoon and then wait for a few hours for that to work. Soapsuds enemas would follow after the dinner hour until I was clear and a final rinse enema would follow.

I still have this problem and I still use Castor Oil and enemas when I need to be completly cleaned out. I also use this method from time to time to clean my husband out.

I use laxatives, specifically Dulcolax an hour or so before the first enema in a total system cleanout.

Lisa,

I am interested in knowing how many Dulcoax tablets you take and how long it takes them to kick in.

How many?
That depends on what else I do!
In a total system cleanout, I typically take 4 if I have the Fleet Bisacodyl mini-enema, or if I have a bisacodyl suppository. Otherwise I use 6.

I did experiment a couple of times with them as a stand-alone laxative. The result was not what I consider favorable. If you want it, I'll re-post it.

As for how fast they kick in: During a total system cleanout, I've had them kick in on the third round. That would make it about 3-4 hours into the procedure, and 4-5 hours after i took it. That is still much faster than I ever had it kick in when taken stand-alone!!
Since I have a flared nozzle, I left the nozzle in to help with retention. That only works with a flared nozzle! I was in knee-chest position, with the enema in me. The nozzle blew out, but I was able to hold everything else in until the normal evacuation time! Just a slight dribble!

In the past here in Germany there existed the "Dulcolax-combination-pack", comprising two Dulcolax coated tablets to be swallowed before going to bed in the evening and two Dulcolax suppositories to be inserted in the morning. This has been a very effective way to cleanse the colon.

There are similar combination products in the US. Here, however, generic drugs have to pass exactly the same tests, and meet the exact same standards as their name-brand counterparts. Therefore, it is less expensive to buy generic bisacodyl tablets, and generic bisacodyl suppositories separately!

I always got a couple of suppositories to start. Mom would wait until I evacuated, then start with soapy enemas. It worked then and as an adult, I still stay regular with treatment once a month. More if possible.

Sometimes I would have up to 6 suppositories pushed into me by Mom. After that I had enemas before the suppositories had time to work. Not sure of the point,I'm thinking mom may have enjoyed those deep inserts. I got way more enemas than my sister. Hers always started like mine.

I got here and enjoy my enemas, I have mom to thank. And funny thing is, my sister loves to give her kids enemas and then discuss it with our mother.
