"Bill Jr" must be my brother. We had the same experience.
Mom would offer me the choice of Fletcher's Castoria or an enema. It didn't take too many times for me to figure out the enema was the least discomfort and a whole lot faster. After a few times mom wouldn't even offer the Castoria because she knew I would not take it.

In my late teens I developed severe constipation due to drugs taken for my asthma condition. My mother would give me a dose of Castor Oil around two in the afternoon and then wait for a few hours for that to work. Soapsuds enemas would follow after the dinner hour until I was clear and a final rinse enema would follow.
I still have this problem and I still use Castor Oil and enemas when I need to be completly cleaned out. I also use this method from time to time to clean my husband out.

How many?
That depends on what else I do!
In a total system cleanout, I typically take 4 if I have the Fleet Bisacodyl mini-enema, or if I have a bisacodyl suppository. Otherwise I use 6.
I did experiment a couple of times with them as a stand-alone laxative. The result was not what I consider favorable. If you want it, I'll re-post it.
As for how fast they kick in: During a total system cleanout, I've had them kick in on the third round. That would make it about 3-4 hours into the procedure, and 4-5 hours after i took it. That is still much faster than I ever had it kick in when taken stand-alone!!
Since I have a flared nozzle, I left the nozzle in to help with retention. That only works with a flared nozzle! I was in knee-chest position, with the enema in me. The nozzle blew out, but I was able to hold everything else in until the normal evacuation time! Just a slight dribble!

In the past here in Germany there existed the "Dulcolax-combination-pack", comprising two Dulcolax coated tablets to be swallowed before going to bed in the evening and two Dulcolax suppositories to be inserted in the morning. This has been a very effective way to cleanse the colon.

There are similar combination products in the US. Here, however, generic drugs have to pass exactly the same tests, and meet the exact same standards as their name-brand counterparts. Therefore, it is less expensive to buy generic bisacodyl tablets, and generic bisacodyl suppositories separately!
