 As often as I was given enemas as a kid, I think it was my contoling mother who had her way, dominated and humiliated me with those punishing enemas. Now I give those same enemas to myself.

I got many enemas growing up, maybe once a week for years. I probably didn't "need" as many as my father gave me, but as a single parent, he did the best he could. I say this in retrospect. At the time I felt it was too much. My grandmother (his mother) told me I needed them, just as he had needed these treatments when he was a boy. I never noticed that dad gave himself enemas, but being the opposite sex and the fact he was 35 years older than me, I didn't ask. I guess I was in the habit of large enema use by the time I was on my own. My daughter gets a few enemas a year. I take an enema daily.

In answer to the question posed to me, I received (except for one time when constipated) enemas only prescribed for me by the family doctor for whatever childhood illness I had at the time. There were no "punishment enemas", which I concur if ever given are horribly abusive.

For me, it was just too much volume (always 2 quarts) for my age (5-10) from a bag hung too high above me (5 feet) and not always cleared of the air. I would say the cause was ignorance, not intentional abuse.

I have never given my children enemas, and would never have wanted to do so. Any pattern there can stop.
