 Unlikely to happen for several reasons:

A patient can be given an instruction sheet and maybe a 'script for the laxatives and then sent away to do the prep. A colonic irrigation requires hospital space, trained personnel time, and disposable speculums, etc. That costs a lot more money.

Also, there is no assurance that a colonic will get a person's entire colon cleaned out. I know that sometimes, no matter how long the session lasts, the water never gets to my cecem.

A colonic does not get into the small intesting, so poo keeps on coming down. A series of laxatives and fasting cleans you top to bottom, end to end.

If you don't want to take the Miralax/GoLytely/Colyte volume ask your doc if you can fast, take Castor Oil, then have a colonic.

My last colonoscopy was done without sedation and the prep was done without harsh chemical preps. I had previously become very nauseated after using golightly/nulytely.

My prep was a 48 hour effort and I was on clear liquids for those two days. I took bisocodyl orally to address the top down issues. I had a colonic in the late PM the day before and another in the AM of the day of my procedure. I had an early PM colonoscopy allowing a couple of hours for my colon to dry out.

The colon hydrotherapist used graduated volumes that eventually filled me all the way to the cecum several times. While these large fills were a bit intense, the machine allowed the pressure to adjust as needed.

My colon was very clean for the procedure which I was able to watch while engaging in direct conversation with the doctor and nurse. The only discomfort was the scope getting past the first turn and then the embarrassment of passing gas for about 5-10 minutes.

I will never go back to the common preps with sedation.

My experience was similar, except I used the Dulcolax & Miralax prep.

Your right about turning the corner from descending to transverse. The nurse pushed on my abdomen hard as the 'scope went around that corner. They got to my cecum... I have the pics.

Mine was also done without sedation. They would not let me go home until I'd farted a bunch.

Hi Sean and e-4heath,
Glad to have non-sedated company. I need to drive home when the doctor is finished (I've also read somewhere that the already very low % of preforations is even lower if not sedated.) I think my frequent enemas have promoted colon health as well as health in general. My GP now knows I like enemas. I detailed my last colonoscopy experience in my "Health Notebook". It was intended for my private use. The nurse asked permission to copy my page of non-prescription medicines. I never intended that my GP see my colonoscopy experience page ... but he did. He made no comment other then that he had read it. I've tried for many many years to keep my frequent use of enemas out of my medical record because most people do not understand why we love our enemas. Oh well. Maybe my love for enemas, particularly coffee enemas, will encourage the doctor to use and recommend them, or at least tolerated those who use them.

I've read that the docs are a lot more careful about pushing hard, if the patient is awake.

That's just fine by me.
