As most know the douche nozzles back yrs ago were curved which ment it was for fem work only, But in the late 1960,s early 1970,s the enema companys started to make those nozzles straight, So i just assume they found out that by making those nozzles straight that it could be used for both a womans douche or for a reg enema and many do today use those nozzles for reg enemas, In fact i have seen enema bags back in the 1980,s that came only with a white straight douche nozzle, This is just my assuption on why they did that or it could have been a cost cutting thing????

I picked up on one comment Kyle made regarding enema bags in the 1980s that came only with the straight douche nozzle. As I've said before, I worked in a pharmacy of a major discount store during that time and I remember those bags. The regular open-top fountain syringes were the ones without the enema nozzle, and they were packaged with the label of douche syringe. The word enema was no where on the box. If you wanted an enema bag with the enema nozzle included, you had to buy the combination syringe.

This practice was short lived. As I understand it, bag manufacturers and the stores that sold the bags received enough complaints, so enema nozzles were once again included with the bags and sold as such.

I specifically recall a middle aged woman who complained to me that she couldn't operate a combination syringe, especially the holding of the full bag while she screwed in the tubing fitting. Another lady actually told me that she always took repeated enemas and that combo bag made that more difficult. I guess they thought I could do something about it.

I do agree that many people use the douche nozzle for enemas. I use either/both depending on the mood I'm in.

It is interesting to note that the current 'enema' nozzle didn't exist until around 1880 with irrigation bags in the mail order catalogs. At that time, rubber tubes (colon tubes) were used for enemas, an enema was given with the tube and a household funnel stuck in the end of it. Colon tubes are still manufactured with the same design having a "funnel" end. Our current enema nozzle was not intended to be inserted into the rectum, but rather was intended to be a connector from the bag hose to a colon tube. That is why it was refered to as an "enema fitting" and has the little 'brim' at the connection end,..you don't see that on a douche nozzle.

S.J. is only partly correct, and a small part in that. I've researched the past use of enemas and equipment the nozzle was and is always an option being inserted. Using it with the colon tube was and is just an option.

If S.J. were correct, then why would enema nozzles be attached to bulb syringes? Why would the older bags have both an infant and adult nozzle included with them? And why would those nozzles be shaped like a bat, with the bigger end on the tip of the nozzle so it would stay in place easier?

Yes, some nozzles are made to attach to a colon tube, but that is a secondary use of the nozzle. The primary use for it to be inserted into the rectum directly.

I think that douche nozzles were originally straight instead of curved. (See drawing in "French douching 1917" on board 61704) And they were designed only for douching, although using them for enemas was always an option for those that preferred a larger nozzle. Jane B. is probably correct that the position used to douche influenced which shape worked better, but I think that the curved nozzle was introduced as an innovation to avoid interference with the seat when douching on the toilet rather than to better fit the supposed curvature of the vagina as her mother told her. Given the popularity of douching as a contraceptive method before the pill, I'd imagine that a lot of douching took place on the toilet when quickness immediately following intercourse was vital.

And back before Sesame worked in a pharmacy, I remember that in the 50's and 60's all open top and folding syringes came with a straight or curved douche nozzle and an adult enema nozzle while the combination syringes had both plus an infant enema nozzle. While I'm sure that most syringes purchased were used primarily for douching, the inclusion of the enema nozzle(s)was a subtle invitation to turn the "douche" syringe into a convenient remedy for constipation if and when the need arose. Over time, the curved nozzles "went straight", perhaps in response to increased opportunities for women to douche leisurely in the bathtub after the birth control pill removed the need for post coital urgency.

After the introduction of disposable douches, manufacturers of durable syringes saw their market evaporating and dropped the enema nozzle and enema instructions, eliminating an association with a procedure that some women found distasteful and maybe saving a few pennies too. They tried to stress that their syringes were "douche" or "feminine" syringes for women only and pointed out how much more economical it was to use the same syringe over and over rather than throwing it away after each douche. Warnings in woman's magazines against using the same syringe for douching and enemas were also probably a factor in causing the enema nozzle to vanish from most open top and folding syringes, although they were still included in combination syringes.

Almost all douche nozzles, going back to at least the 1880s, were curved.

The early plastic ones, especially on the better quality fountain and combination syringes with screw-ob nozzles, were all curved.

The straight nozzles became more common in about the 1970s, first on the cheaper syringes, then on most.

I think the cost to manufacture straight nozzles is just lower. It's that simple.

Hi
I have a douche syringe and it has a curved nozzle on it
and I do like to use it as it turns me on when I insert it up inside me to do an enema. I have used several kinds of nozzles but the douche nozzle really makes me hard when I use it on myself.I like to give myself enemas and have since I was about 15.enemas are very sensual when I take them.
