In our family with 6 children, an enema was the FIRST option in treating a cold or similar illness. And if we were too sick to go to school, that meant we were in line for an enema ... no questions asked, no options given. As soon as the house was empty, mom would said get undressed and come to the bathroom. She was preparing the enema solution and her favorite 12-ounce syringe with the small nozzle was waiting to be used. Three bulbs filled ... wait several minutes, expel, then repeat the situation only with four bulbs filled, followed by rinse enemas. It was a cure-all

Enemas were a very common procedure in our house during the 50's and early 60's. By the 70's, they were still used but not as frequently. I suppose that's because we kids had grown to our mid to late teens.

Toilet training with suppositories and enemas was a more common thing back then. Have a BM today or get an enema or suppository.

We lived on farm in 50's and had similar experience. Mom gave us enemas each other Saturday - "for heathy" - and additional, if we were sick. If was part of life till we left home - in our 17-18.
