Hello,
I think your mother-in-law is right, but I would say a BM every two days may be sufficient, at least at the beginning of the treatment ; it will be easier for the kids to endure. Glycerin suppositories should do the trick and - if it is not enough - an enema a month would be appropriate. There again, take it easy, start with small volumes (less than a quart), with a spoon of table salt dissolved in it, and proceed slowly to make the process comfortable.
Hope you fix all three up easily. Let us know...

Thanks so much. I thought by the time they were 8 and 10 that they would take ownership of their bowels and it would not be an issue but both of our girls will stand around with their legs crossed needing to poop and now with our son demonstrating the same I'm just fed up with it all.

Kim:
You are right, they have taken over control of their bowels; but they are running into the fact that they can't always have things their own way. (I remember when I was little hearing things such gems of wisdom as 'You can do anything you want, you just have to decide to do it, and get on with it.' I did so, deciding to continue my playing or whatever, and ignoring, even suppressing, the 'urge'; not realizing that there are some things (such as going poo) that one cannot avoid just by willpower. So I was a 'withholder'.) My mum was nowhere near as patient as you have been. She was getting frustrated with my disregard of toilet training when I was at the age of 4. (and a half; those halves are important at that age). She took me to the doctor, a friendly GP (I never had a pediatrician) who examined me and, I surmise, concluded that I had nothing wrong with me that an enema wouldn't fix. That fateful exam is forever burned in my mind. I remember it perfectly, much better than my first enema... But that is a little off topic. Thus commenced my regular enema sessions...
Anyway; I agree with your Mother in law that your kids should get into a routine of regular pooing. But I would, if I were you, have each of them examined to see if there is any other condition which may be causing problems. If they have not got a medical problem, I suspect that the suppository suggestions mentioned elsewhere here are a good start. I agree with the one who suggested that every day BMs are not essential, but after the second day, something should be done. (In my case, skipping a day was enough to bring out the enema equipment.) As for psychiatric disturbances due to being enemized; I don't think that enemas themselves are a problem; there may be problems with how they are approached and done. Ask your Mother in law; she is obviously experienced.
Please, please, advise us (the board) on how things come out (bad pun).
