Matt, you said you didn't want to get into the double standard thing, but it does exist, but it's very common.
Women are the traditional caretakers of the family, so if a mother has a daughter, she will very likely be involved
in taking care of her younger brothers and sisters. So, for that reason, as you said, "it was mostly girls watching boys", not the reverse.
Your sister must have had your mother's permission to be present. If it bothered you, didn't you ask your mother to send her out of the room?
