I could count on being embarrassed by my mother whenever I was subjected to an enema. She told her sister about it and sometimes, when she visited, her aunt.
My enemas also came up in conversation over coffee with mom's friends. I recall one time when one of her friends was commenting on how difficult it was to administer an enema to her son, who was my age. My mother asked her how often she gave him enemas. When she replied not often, my mother told her that was her mistake. She gave me enemas periodically she told her friend and she should do the same.
Enemas were also discussed in front of me while at the doctor's office. Mom would relate my most recent enema session to the nurse. I was always mortified that she would add how uncooperative I'd been, but she didn't. I still thought the nurse concluded I'd been bad during the enema.
The doctor never asked about enemas but would mention that a soapsuds enema should be given as needed.
Mom and her friends also talked about their enemas, though they seldom used the word. Norma, a lady from the neighborhood, was always mentioning her physics when she came by. She either just had a good physic or needed a good physic because she was bloated.
One of my aunts talked about her colonics and told my mom that she would benefit from going for them. Mom didn't think much of oolonics apparently and dismissed the idea. Home remedies worked fine for her.
