Somehow I doubt that a real doctor reccomended an M&M enema. Very few doctors even reccomend a large volume enema of even water or soap suds these days. Mostly, it's a Fleet.

An M&M is made of 8 oz milk and 8 oz of molasses, stirred together and warmed. It is usually given with a bag, can, or Higgenson using a #28 to #32 colon tube inserted carefully at least 10 inches in the knee-chest position preferably. The enema should be given as quickly as comfort permits because it will start to work very strongly within a couple of minutes.

The bed and surrounds should be covered with disposable pads. If given in bed, have the bedpan or commode instantly accessible. You won't make it to the toilet.

The results will be a very sticky, smelly mess and several more urgent BMs in the hours that follow.

Yes Sean, my Dr. did recomend a M and M enema, but could not get the hospital to approve. I was involved in a car accident some 35 years ago and crushed L-2 vertibra. I was parilized from the waist down for most of a year before I started getting movement back in my legs. Needless to say my bowels have stayed paralized. So with cronic constipation, IBS, and long with low spinter control, now they say I have something called slow transit. (Say I eat something on Mon. it will be Fri. or sat. before it shows up in my rectum). Yes, I have been all the newest forms of laxatives to no avail. Fleets are not inserted high enough, so they go in and come right back out and do no good! So that leaves the good ole enema. And the enema tube has got to be inserted around 10 inches before I can even retain that for very long of a time. I could go on and on but why waste my time and yours. So YES Sean my Dr.. did recommend a Milk and Molasses enema.

Oh, by the way Sean, thank you for the explanation of a M and M enema. Sounds like it is very explosive. Maybe I`m glad the hospital did noy approve! Thank You again

An alternative might be a Dulcolax enema.

Crush 4x 5 mg Dulcolax tablets and mix with a quart of warm water. Shake well and give promptly.

It's very potent, but much less messy.

Even in taking a M&M enema you will be able to wash out the colon, not more, for between the small intestine and the colon there exists a valve . In the case that you want to cleanse the bowels totally it is better to swallow a good dose of Castor Oil (normally 2 oz) together with fridged orange juice, this early in the morning, not having breakfasted. You will be astonished upon the effects 2 to 4 hours later.

M&M enemas are said to be very effective in moving stubborn cases of constipation or impaction. I've tried them and find they are nearly impossible to retain for more than a few moments.

They are still high on the list for some physicians, because they are so effective in moving the bowels quickly. They are certainly not the most enjoyable or relaxing enema.

In my 20's, while in the service, I was in a coma for 10 days. When I returned, I was severely constipated because of the long period with no bowel activity. Doctor's could not get me going again. A nurse suggested the M&M. Tried it and it worked. I was mostly out of it and don't know much more.

My wife works in a hospital pharmacy. About 5 years ago they got a new female doctor in Emergency. She specifically asked the pharmacy to carry milk and molasses, because she liked to give M&M enemas to emergency patients. That was a real surprise.

I'd bet that doctor became very unpopular with the nurses.

No doubt, Obamacare is a disaster and will result in much higher costs and poor service and lots of fraud, just like the DMV.

The insurance company probably does not have a code for an M&M. Talk to the nurse and see if she'll put a few sugar packets or some honey or extra soap into the enema water.

So sorry it took me so long to rerespond, but you are right Sean there is no code for M ans M enemas! Theres not even a code for ENEMAS!!!! So to get around this they just bill a out-patient room charge at the hospital and nothing is said about enemas. Its worked for now anyway. We`ll see about the future.
