Generally, enemas today are limited in hospitals. They are given prior to some surgical procedures if the patient has been admitted a day or so before the operation.

Many surgeries, of course, are now performed on an out-patient basis. The bowel preparation, if prescribed, is done at home and most often involves a laxative.

As for enemas at home for constipation, I have no way of knowing how oftem they are given, but I suspect that enemas are not used as much as they one were. I do recall some childhood friends mentioning having enemas, but at the time I had only a rough idea of what enemas were. I had never experienced one until I was 30 or 31 and received a barium enema in a radiology office.

dear fran-i really dont think that enemas are limited to hospitals.what i am going to tell you was about 10 years ago,i was 16 and my sister was 15. my mother would always give my sister and i a large warmwater enema on the first day of our periods and one more during the month. we would have to lay on our backs and spread our legs while she administered the enema, and she always used a long colon tube while doing it. once the enema got started she would put a hot water bag on our stomachs and massage the rest of our stomach with her hands until the enema was over, usually took about 25 minutes.but after it was over i did feel cleaned out and most of my cramps were gone.

Thank you for your testimony.

But when I read all posts on this site, I find that enemas are still much used.
It seems to me that all the equipment you need very easily found in stores: pears to enemas, bocks, etc.
True?
False?

Here in France if suppositories are of use in case of concerns of health as much for children as for adults, enemas are primarily used a little in the hospitals. And are often "fleet" rather than the enema enemas with water in a bock.
To the pleasure of you read

I was once in France and was having a major rectal bleed. Saw a gastsroenterologist who did an exam but said an in depth colonoscopy was necessary. He set me up for an early appointment the next morning at a local hospital. Once check in, nurses came in to prep me. This consisted of several enemas. They had me laying on my back with my knees raised. They used a plastic tub with what looked like a quart of water in it and a tube running from the bottom of it. The end of the tube had a long green nozzle with a bulbus end. They slid that up into my butt and would empty the tub into me. After holding it a few minutes they would have me empty into a toilet to see what came out. They repeated this 4 or 5 time to see if it would run clear. While there wasn't a lot of fecal matter, there was quite a bit of blood. So it never ran "clear". Despite my anxiety about the health problem, I couldn't help enjoying the process and tried hard not to gest hard and show it. Turned out I had an ulcer just beyond the range of the anuscope used in the doctor's office. Got the full colonoscopy anyway. Sorry I wasn't awake for that experience.
