 Regardless of what caused the erection there is always the underlying connotation of sex. And it doesn't depend on the age of the individual who has the erection.

When I had my case of priapism, everyone including myself, the doctor, the nurses and the hospital staff knew it was a medical condition. That didn't stop them from coming in and wanting to look and me from feeling embarrassed and getting more excited (which made the condition worse).

For a young man raised with a high level of moral teaching but no clear understanding of what has just happened, there is the feeling "I've done wrong. This is happening because of evil inside me."

There is the expression "That's not done!" which is an exaggerated way of instructing a child "Don't do that!"

Well, in this context, having an erection in the presence of one's mother -- one's MOTHER, may it be emphasized! -- simply "isn't done." And the message is communicated by total silence, and maternally-administered enemas come to a halt without further explanation.

And there are no answers, only lingering questions.

So, yes, this matter is still an issue with some adults today, for childhood memories linger.
