It is fortunate that you still have your job. If you were in the U.S. you could have lost your job. Orderlies are still around, but fewer and fewer facilities have them on the staff any longer. As female nurses, aides, and techs
began taking on tasks they had previously delegated to orderlies, many places decided they could do without any orderlies, or with a lot fewer orderlies.

Do you see a similar trend developing in your country? If the females are gradually taking over for orderlies, you might be wise to study and try again to achieve RN status, or some other position that will be needed if and when orderlies are phased out.

Or are you confident that your jobs will not be taken over eventually by females in your country?

Thank you for your concern, Thomas! Yes, I am lucky as there are many more qualified medical people than there are jobs! this is especially true for RN's in the Philippines. I know a medical assistant who graduated VALADECTORIAN of a prestige nursing university who passed his Board the first time (which is unusual) and now is being basically a secretary for a Doctor! This was his first job offer after looking for a year and he is a very nice young man!

In the Philippines we are seeing a huge shift toward male RN's as female RN's have a better chance at working in a call center at higher pay than an RN.RN's make about the peso equivelent of $ 10 to $ 12 a day while as an orderly I make about $10.

Due to our tradition of having males doing pre op shaves and cleansing enemas for male patients I don't think I am in any near term jeopardy. I have many extended family members and friends who work in various hospitals. One of them an orderly in a mid size Manila Hospital has told me however that they are assigning male orderlies more to the ER and OR due to lifting strength and that ward orderlies or cna's and midwives is now more like 60/40 female instead of 50/50. That is the only hospital I know of that is moving slowly in the direction of more female aides on the floor duty. It puts a strain on my cousin and the other male orderlies as often the male patients want a male to do their shave and cleansing enemas instead of a female. This hospital where my cousin works is not completely lined up with patient preference and expectation, at least in this aspect.

Anyway, I am very middle aged and I think I will be fine. I really prefer the direct patient care I get to do as an orderly with my male patients. Doing pubic shaves and giving many many cleansing enemas is not for everyone, but as I said before, overall I love my job and I am grateful for it!
