I have a very attractive 31yo neighbor named Shannon in my apartment that I became friends with several years ago. Nothing sexual, she's already taken, but her boyfriend stays gone flying for Continental. We share and talk about everything, and keep secrets like real friends do. She's a CNA at a local doctor's office, and sometimes shares her frustrations about people she works with and nagging patients.
One day, I started having sharp pains in my lower abdomen. I thought it might be gas or indigestion, but it kept on for several days. I decided to go to my regular doctor. She ran a few tests and finally decided to refer me to a gastroenterologist. I went to see him the following Tuesday. He scheduled me to have a barium enema that Friday, and sent me home with instructions on how to prepare, along with a bag full of Fleet enemas, Dulcolax suppositories, and Go Lytely.
I told Shannon that evening what I was in for, and she said "dear God, the prep's ten times worse than the enema itself." She said "that stuff you've gotta drink might make you sick." I said "beautiful!" She said "you've got to have an enema Friday morning, think you handle it yourself?" I really didn't know what an enema was up to this point. I answered "I guess so". Friday morning, I took the enema out of the box and read the directions. It dawned on me I was going to have trouble giving it to myself. I tried, but I couldn't squeeze the flimsy bottle right, and the nozzle kept coming out and leaking. I put my boxers on and called Shannon. I asked "how do you suppose to use these things alone?" She said "what?" I said "this stupid enema." She laughed and said "I thought you'd have trouble, I be down in a minute." She came in and said "let me show you how the pros do it." She took the other Fleet out of the bag and put it in the bathroom sink with warm water. She said "you might want to spread a towel out on the floor." After about 10 minutes she took the Fleet out of the water and dried the bottle off. Then, with a whimsical look on her face, she said "drop your drawers, get down on your hands and knees and bend over." I said "no Shannon, you shouldn't do this, c'mon." She said "get down silly, it only takes a minute. I've seen more naked mens' butts than I care to count." I reluctantly pulled my boxers over my butt, knelt down and bent over. She had me lower my chest to the floor and raise my rearend. I heard the cap come off the nozzle. She said "now don't tense up." I felt her left hand on the side of my buttcheek to spread me a little, then a slight warm sensation in my rectum as she slid the nozzle all the way in. It went in so easy. I felt a quick rush of warmth in my rectum, that faded into the area around my waist where I had been hurting. She withdrew the nozzle and put the cap back on. Then she said "better get on the commode, this stuff works fast." She wasn't lying, it did work fast and EXTREMELY EFFECTIVE! I almost couldn't look her in the face because I was so humiliated. She said "wasn't that bad now was it?" I told her I didn't want to have that done again, but she said "the barim enema is much bigger, and it won't be much fun". Funny thing is though, the Fleet enema she just gave me made my pain go away. I was just full of shit! I cancelled the barium test and Shannon said I shouldn't have just to be safe. But I haven't had the problem again, and it's been over 2 years. Shannon and I are still best buddies. But she knows me a little better now after what happened. I guess I trust her more than anyone, I let her stick a tube up my butt after all.

I'm surprised that one of the doctors you visited didn't suggest that you try an enema yourself before sending you for a barium enema. Good thing you had some help from your neighbor and that the enema solved your problem.

You avoided the barium. and you can be glad you did. If
you had immediate cramps from the regular enema you received, you can be sure the barium enema would have been a lot worse. You would not have been able to "go" until they were finished x-raying you, which might be 15 minutes
or so, but it would seem like an hour. You were lucky.

Going to your doctor first was a very good decision with the symptoms you were experiencing.

If you had tried an enema before going to the doctor it would have been very risky. The fact that you saw your doctor, and the fact that she prescribed a barium enema means that appendicitis was ruled out.

If she thought you had an inflamed appendix she would have sent you for surgery. Normally, prescribing anything for yourself before seeing a doctor is not a good idea. But you did see her first. I'm glad it turned out ok for you.
