I had encopresis until I was 13 years old. I have found since the time I grew up with this it has got much worse. This was in the 1980s. Since the late 1970s early 1980s there are many kids that grow up like this. One because of our diet and 2 because parents have been scard to use enemas as treatment as in the past they were always used. In the 1940s or 1950s if a child did not go there were no one questioning the use of an enema to make them go when they would hold it.
Today people are afraid that touching any child in there behind could do harm to them. That may or may not be true. I feel it is much worse to use laxatives. My mother bought into this and used them and they hurt me way more than a small tube in my butt ever could have. She gave me them at nighttime before bed. There was one day in the 6th grade when I had an accident at school. I guess my pants had a brown stain on them and when our class was walking in from recess a few girls saw it. I became the laughing stock of the 6th grade. A girl would just look at me and laugh. You can more than likely know what that did to me at a time when you are just learning about girls ect.
My view here is that to treat encopresis you should use enemas and suppositories they are predictable. You know when your child will have to go. Not at school when they are not expecting it.
Note When giving an enema or suppository tell the child what is going to happen and why and let them have control of it. Let them put the enema tube in their own butt with your help and let them control the flow. Keep them in control. They will not be a fearful if you do this.
How did I get cured? I did just that. Before entering Jr. High school I found my moms enema bag. I was scard at first because of my enemas before. I first took the tube and slid it in my butt and moved it in and out. It kind of felt good you know. It was not bad. Then I added a little water to the bag and again put in into my butt. I then sat on the potty. I let go and I was cured. I used this from that day on if I needed it. I was not fearful of this at all.

Eric,
I can relate to the encopresis problem. I used to get enemas for that and played the "holding game" too. Similar results with eventually not being able to hold the stool and liquid coming out around it. That was the worst and the worst happened several times in school. By far the most embarrassing incident happened when we were in the middle of a visit to a large city and in the center of a large park. I dumped a huge stool into my underwear at age 13. There was nothing I could do to stop it. We were with friends from home and they were at least polite enough not to remark on the stinky teenager that they had to ride in the car with. Naturally we didn't have the enema syringe with us to finish the cleanout at the motel. That would have been even more embarrassing because the whole family would be in the room while I got the enema(s). I made it home after getting cleaned up and showered. But when we got home, the first order of business was enemas.
