Tourist assaulted, robbed in Namatanai

By: ALPHONSE BARIASI (The national 2th August, 2002)
A STUDENT from the Mentone Grammar School in Victoria, Australia was assaulted and robbed of K100 at Namatanai, New Ireland province on July 13.
The year 11 student, James Gregson was in a group of 22 students from Mentone Grammar who were on a bike riding expedition to New Ireland and other parts of the country.
The group was in the country from June 29 until July 15.
The assault and theft left a sour end to an otherwise fun-filled trip for the young Australians.
School chaplain and trip organiser Reverend Roger Williams wrote to The National on July 17 to report the matter.
"You may be aware that each year a group of students travel to New Ireland on two separate occasion to ride bikes along the island I do hope these trips can continue," Rev Williams wrote.
" We have another trip organised for early October of this year."
The assaulted student in his report to the Namatanai police station stated that he was riding to Namatanai on the morning of July 13 to join his group when two young men stopped him at Ramat village, assaulted him and stole K100 from him.
"A knife was pointed at my throat and my personal possessions were taken including my wallet from which one hundred kina was taken," the student reported.
When asked by the teachers accompanying the students to return the cash, the youths refused to do so.
Yesterday, a Namatanai police station staff said the young men have not been arrested.
In another school-related incident in neighbouring East New Britain province, villagers yesterday morning bashed up a youth suspected of threatening a teacher and stealing school property and handed him over to police.
An accomplice is still at large and police also recovered a firearm, ammunition and balaclavas from the arrested young man's home.
Rabaul police station commander Stanley Penga said the two young men broke into the home of a woman teacher at the Malaguna school grounds early on Wednesday evening but were scared away when she screamed.
Students said one of the youths assaulted the teacher with a gun and her screams alerted her neighbours and scared away the assailants.
Mr Penga said the suspect in custody would be charged. As a result of the incident on Wednesday night, classes at the Malaguna Primary School were suspended indefinitely yesterday morning.
Students and parents have been advised that the school administration will relay a message on when to resume classes through Radio East New Britain.
