It's painful for a child, and probably for a small adult. That seems to be a major reason that rectal temps. are history. Decent people don't want to see kids subjected to unecessary discomfort, and modesty is taken more seriously these days. I've met a couple of women who had rectal temps. taken as adults, and said that they didn't like them, because they were painful.
