For me, as I got older the worst was the fact that it was being taken like a child. As a boy, the last thing you want is to be considered a baby. I didn't know for sure how other kids got their temps taken, but of course, I wanted to be "grown up", so it didn't matter. I got my temp taken rectally at the doctor up to age 12, and at home into my teens.
The second most embarassing part was the vaseline. At home, mom would always wipe my bottom, which was extremely embarassing. At the doctor, they didn't wipe you at all, so you could either wipe right there in the exam room (in front of mom), or wait until you could get to a bathroom. I almost always waited, so by the time I got to a bathroom, my bottom was a greasy mess that itched like crazy.
The last time I got my rectal temp taken at the doctor at age 12, I remember similar feelings as those described in the waiting room thread. I walked out with a greasy bottom, and it felt like everyone knew I had a thermometer in my bottom. When I got home from that visit, there were friends of the family over, including their 12 year old daughter who I had a crush on, and I was terrified that she would somehow know I had just got a thermometer in my butt. I remember talking to her with a bottom full of vaseline, desperate to go to the bathroom, but somehow thinking I might give myself away by going too quick. I eventually went, wiped, changed my undies, and even moved my shot band-aid from my butt to my arm.
