If you read some of the posts, you would think that rectal temps. are routinely done on adults, by everyone from the dentist to the chiropractor. I'm in my 50's, and have never received a rectal temp. from a doctor or nurse under any circumstances since the age of 5. I've only heard of the procedure being done on teens at home or in the hospital, and that was many years ago. I don't doubt that rectal temps. are done on all ages in some foreign countries, but it's my belief that you would have to be in a coma before an american healthcare worker would take a rectal temp. on a patient.

It depends on circumstances such as patient's condition, illness, hospital, medical facility policies, or the patient's physician who may determine the route of measurement during the taking of his/her patient's vital signs.

Someone should conduct a study and speak with licensed physicians and nurses at hospitals and private practices, to discover whether rectal temps. are still being taken. I believe that a genuine and unbiased study would reveal that it isn't happening.
