Hi Tom, Louis,
I remember the sketch in Dr. Spock's Baby and Child Care fondly.
You describe the sketch perfectly Louis, but it was a sketch so maybe it wasn't what you remember.
What I remember was the baby's surprised look, his arms and hands were out front with the fingers splayed - again surprise, his bottom was bare, but he was wearing little booties...
It may be my imagination, but I think the sketch changed in later editions of the book. It was still the same scene, but less expression, etc.
I think the original sketch artist was having some fun with the baby's look of surprise at the procedure :)
