For me too. My rectal temps were always taken like the one on the lower right, bare feet held up by mom while inserting the thermometer. It is one of my earliest memories looking up to my bare feet while getting my temp taken.

Once I was out of diapers my mom give me a choice. Over her lap or on my back in that position. I still picked on my back. It felt better.

The one with the boy reading the comic book, what kind of thermometer is that? It seems big and long. The angle of insertion seems way off.

The thermometer looks like it is in backwards. Perhaps this picture was a composite of two or more different pictures and the creator did not know anything about what a thermometer would look like when inserted.

I have posted these pics earlier. There was one pic of a new born little boy as well in the set.A closeup, it was almost possible to read the thermometer.

All those pics stem from a series of parental guidebooks that was issued in Sweden during the 60s- 80s.
They all show how european rectal thermometers should be used on different children depending on their age.
I dont know if the pics are just demonstrational or real live shots. To me it seems as none of the thermometers are properly inserted. They just appear to be held close or put between the buttocks.

The latest of the pics is the suntan boy. That one is from a book issued 1989 so its most likely not photoshopped.

I just posted here several times. We have a large collection of Medical, Nursing and Child Care books/manuals from 1900 to 1970's with this and
related in photos and drawings. No PC at home,
could photocopy and share. Probably dozens and
dozens not seen in decades. Some books, we have
yet to find another copy, ie. 1940.

:) I would love to have you photocopy and scan what ever you have. I have found quite a few pictures of this nature through google books, but most are from before 1920 and the quality is not very good. I also have a few child care magazines from the 1940-1950 period. I will try to post these.

I sent those pics to BM who administered the storage and publishing. I dont know what happend to the infant boy pic.Ill forward that pic again together with a new one from an older book. The posted ones wereall in maximum 600dpi resolution when I sent them so youll have to contact the BM if you want the hi-res scans. All of those pics were in b/w in the books.

Wow, a couple of these really bring back memories. I remember so much being over my aunt's lap..for both temperature and of course the suppository.

If anyone of our German friends could look around, they might be able to grab this book and post the pictures. I know from previous conversations there a at least one suppository and one rectal temperature picture inside.

Brunswick, just curious if you were ever able to get a way to scan some of the rarer pictures?

Hi Rob, Not yet. Have other things going on.
Am retired, I guess.
If any serious member(s) want to trade photocopies
(I don't have) by postal, contact me.
Use girlfriend's PC and formerly daughter's and
Library. The last 2 are now out.
I have back to 1900 manuals, etc. many are boxed up,
have to search. Found over decades.
Was at a used booksale last month, was disappointed.
Little of the older selections.
I have one book from 1940, never found another copy?
Have faxed in past, but not scanned.

If you are able , check out google books. you can search for "enemas, suppositories or temperatures in advanced search. Set it to return "full". I found all kinds of pictures (mostly from before 1925). I am looking forward to when google is able to at least get into the 30's and 40's. I feel that that really was the golden age of enemas and people were getting all sorts of advice and photographic instructions.

You will be waiting a long time. A change in the copyright law in 1999 extended the time in which intellectual property can go into the public domain from 75 years to 95 years. Deceased Rep. Sony Bono pushed that legislation through the House of Representatives and the Millennium Copyright law eventually came into law Bono's wife who replaced him wants to extend the length of a copyright to eternity minus one day.

It is a lot more complicated than I might have led a reader to believe. The 95 years refers to corporate publications. Here are comprehensive details copyright law:

http://copyright.cornell.edu/resources/publicdomain.cfm

Take two extra strength Tylenol's before reading it, otherwise don't be surprised after reading the entire document that you have a headache.

An easy to understand and an amusing explanation of today's copyright laws can be found at:

http://www.publicdomainsherpa.com/copyright-public-domain.html

It is scary to say the least and the law needs an overhaul (but don't hold your breath).

Wow, you really can control congress with money. I think i might have an ancestor who wrote something back in the late 1700's. If this new law is indeed to be enacted (and retroactive like Bono wants) then I am going to be a very rich man :)
