Maggie-
I have much empathy for you. I too did a stint in a hospital about age 8 1/2, and learned very quickly that the rectal route would be the ONLY way my temperature would be taken. The day I was admitted I had four RTs done as I went from one station to another, then again on admission to the ward. Like you, every four hours a rectal temperature taking, once in front of a number of nursing students receiving skills instruction. I too was given two pretty significant buttocks injections on the day of my surgery, and though I didn't scream, it brought tears to my eyes despite my pleading and begging for an arm shot, got it in my butt muscle in each cheek. It was a sedative prior to my surgery. (little did I know in the way of shots particularly, what lay in store for me not long after being released. A few months later, I learned the excruciating painful rabies shot ordeal 1st hand, getting 21 injections in my stomach after being bitten by a dog, never located.)
Shots I'm leary of. Rectal thermometers and rectal temperature taking is my person preference even as an adult. So that's my story. Yours was a very interesting one.
