I would want to be 5 again and wearing my red flannel sleeper with the drop seat. I would relive the time I had pneumonia, ran a high fever, and the whole family gathered to watch the big Taylor Binoc rectal thermometer slide into my bottom. The other parts of the process have their own appeal -- the aspirin suppositories, other meds for nausea given rectally, the daily enemas, the nose drops, the penicillin shots given by the doctor who made a house call each morning, and the bonding with my mother. My parents went to Italy on a honeymoon and left me with our nextdoor neighbors Jennifer, husband Mike and their two kids. She looked alot like Kristy Swanson then. I always had fun staying with them, but on this particular stay I came down with an ear infection and streph throat. Jennifer felt my forehead and stomach to see if I was hot, and told Mike she was going to take me in the bathroom and get my temperature. In the days before ear thermometers, if they couldn't take an oral temperature, the only other "accurate" alternative was rectally. I don't know if it was the fact that she took her children's temperatures rectally, or if she thought up the butt was the safer route because I might bite the thermometer, but she decided to take mine rectally as well. I was so embarrassed when she told me she had to put it in my butt. She had me kneel forward on the lid of the commode and pulled down my pajama bottoms so just my butt was exposed. She lubed the thermometer up. I felt her part my cheeks a little, then came that intense burning, tingling, discomfort that I always dreaded from a rectal thermometer. I whimpered and started to cry, but she comforted me and reassued me it was going to be alright. It wasn't so much the discomfort, but the embarrassment of having something stuck up my butt by a pretty girl like Jennifer. She pulled the thermometer out and read it. It was 103 degrees. She told Mike I was burning up, so they rushed me to the ER. Luckily at the ER they used a flexible digital oral thermometer. They gave me antibiotics and I was better a couple days before my parents came home. I've never told my mom that Jennifer took my temperature rectally. But looking back, man I should have enjoyed letting Jennifer do that. At 48, she's still gorgeous. What a difference 25 years makes. [ Post a Reply to This Message ]
