Hi-
Hate to tell you this, but I think- though I could be mistaken, most medical offices/facilities rarely have, much less use rectal thermometers, particularly for adults. We're in a time where the rectal thermometer (mercury style) is pretty much banned, and with the newer technological innovations such as the "Exorgen Temporal Scanner thermometer", and similar thermometers, the use and need for a rectal temperature/thermometer is pretty much on the back burner or won't be used by certain medical facilities or staff. Sadly too, there is a stigma attached to this practice*
Now, if your experience in the past at the particular facility you go to, rectals were taken, well there's a chance they might still do that, though from what you've posted, it doesn't seem that you've had RTs there. If you tell the staff oral is not good for you...you may get it taken under your arm or in your ear.
I've had more than my fair share of rectal temperature takings dating back to the 70s and 80s, and on occasion, a colon therapist or even a masseuse might be willing to do a rectal (You need to provide the thermometer most of the time)temperature, but that's not a guarantee.
So, good luck with your quest. Honestly, and I'm not trying to dissuade you, but I think you're going to have a difficult time finding a medical facility that does rectal temperatures. That being said, and it's just my view on your post, there probably are those facilities w/ staff who will readily take a rectal reading, and like you say, yes it is the most accurate route/method.
* No doubt there are times/circumstances where rectal temperatures must and need to be taken. The run of the mill cold or flu probably won't warrant that.
