I agree a rectal temp was often followed by an enema. And an enema was often preceded by a rectal temp - Mom wanted to know my temp before the enema might influence it. And nightgown, bathrobe and position on the bed have always been the same for temps and enemas.
But the main reason is rectal temps are more accurate - I take a rectal temp each morning, generally not followed by a clyster.
